This research deals with the phenomenon of internet addiction which has emerged as a serious social problem as the Internet has increasingly become popular. By examining the existing researches first, the propensity to alienation of the Internet users was established as a variable considered having effect on Internet addiction. Moreover, this research will examine what relations the status of Internet usage and the attitude toward the Internet discussed in the existing researches have with Internet addiction.
The university students were polled to find out to what extent and in what way the propensity to alienation has relations with Internet addiction. The research results showed that Internet addiction has close relations with the propensity to alienation of Internet users. Together with this, basic background variables also were found to have the same significant relations with Internet addiction as in the previous researches.
The research question and hypotheses of this research to examine the relations between Internet addiction and propensity to alienation are as follows.
[Research Question] What relations does the propensity to alienation have with Internet addiction?
[Hypothesis 1] The feeling of helplessness may have positive correlation with Internet addiction.
[Hypothesis 2 ] The feeling of lost moral standards may have positive correlation with Internet addiction.
[Hypothesis 3] The feeling of isolation may have positive correlation with Internet addiction.
The results of examining what relations the propensity to alienation has with Internet addiction with regard to the research question are summarized as follows.
First, according to the index of the propensity to Internet addiction, more than 50% of those who were surveyed showed the early or serious addiction symptoms. In terms of gender, males showed higher composition ratio in Internet addiction than females.
Second, the propensity to alienation and Internet addiction showed statistically significant difference. The group of serious Internet addiction tended to show high degree of alienation, and about 63% of the respondents experienced high feeling of alienation. About 16% of the group of those who were in the early stage of addiction experienced the feeling of alienation but only 0.59% of the normal group experienced a high degree of alienation.
Third, in the subordinate realm of the propensity to alienation, Internet addiction and the feeling of alienation consistently showed positive correlations. In examining alienation in terms of the feeling of helplessness, about 95% of the group of those who were in serious Internet addiction experienced high degree of the feeling of helplessness, about 34% the group of those who were in the early stage of addiction and about only 3% of the normal group were applicable to the same experience. In terms of the feeling of lost moral standards, about 91% of the group of those who were in serious Internet addiction experienced the feeling of lost moral standards, 56.76% of the group of those who were in the early stage of addiction and 12.35% of the normal group showed positive correlation of Internet addiction with the feeling of lost moral standards. The results of analysis on the feeling of alienation related to the feeling of isolation, very few respondents experienced the feeling of isolation, but Internet addiction and the feeling of isolation showed significant relations with each other.
Thus, Internet addiction can be considered having complex correlation with the propensity to alienation of internet users including basic background variables. Accordingly, the perception and viewpoint on the causes and prescription for Internet addiction should be multilateral and comprehensive rather than simplistic.
