The purpose of this study is to find out the factors which enable the children from multi-cultural families to adapt into school life successfully. Compared to the recent concerns about multi-cultural families, especially the foreign mother's lived experience in Korea, little attention has been paid to the issue of school adaptation of children from multi-cultural families. In the sense of social welfare, the children from multi-cultural families might be most vulnerable client group who needs the affirmative collective intervention from society. In these contexts, this study is to figure out the factors affecting their successful school adaptations empirically focusing on the Cheonan and Asan areas, two major cities in Chungchungnamdo province.
The data for this study have been collected by survey with the standardized questionnaires to children in elementary schools and 120 cases was distributed. Out of them, 97cases were finally returned and coded and put into analysis. The main statistical method for this study is the multiple regression analysis by using SPSS 14.0 version. The results showed that statistically significant factors contributing successful school adaption of children from multi-cultural families in this area are the degree of fluency of Korean language and social support for them. In addition, out of social support, especially, support from teachers is the most important factor to make them to adapt into school lives successfully. Another interesting findings is that most of mothers in this area come from Japan compared to mothers of rural area in Chungchungnamdo-province whose majority is from eastern south asia. It might be expected that difference of mother's original nationality could bring out significantly different dynamics in family.
Implications for social work practice and policy for these children are very clear. To make the children from multi-cultural families to adapt into Korea and acculturate them into school life, first of all, diverse policy measures should be introduced to motivate and encourage teachers to provide professional supports for them. In addition, formal and informal programs is needed to elevate their language fluency, which might be helpful to obtain their self-esteem and empowerment.
