It is considered that we can provide an opportunity to young children to get access the chemistry activity interestingly. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Chemistry Activity base on the Inquiry Approach of science teaching-learning method on any differences in preschooler's scientific attitude and scientific process skills.
The major research questions are as follows:
1. Are there any differences between chemistry activity based on the inquiry approach of science teaching-learning method and the expositive approach of science teaching-learning method on the preschool children's scientific attitude?
2. Are there any differences between chemistry activity based on the inquiry approach of science teaching-learning method and the expositive approach of science teaching-learning method on the preschool children's scientific process skills?
The subjects of this study were 60 children from two classes, who were five-year-old, attending the "K kindergarten" which is located in Uijongbu-shi, Kyeonggi-do. The two classes were arbitrarily placed each into the experimental group(30 children), comparison group(30 children). The research procedures were pre-test, action research and post-test in order.
Before the experiment, homogeneity test was conducted about the children's average ages between the experimental group and comparison group. It was assumed that they were homogeneous groups because any statistically significant difference did not appear between these two groups.
The children in the two groups involved in the chemistry activity for 4 weeks which totaled 6 times in all. The young children in the two groups involved in the chemical experiment were made by each approaches(experimental group : inquiry approach of science teaching-learning method, comparison group : expositive approach of science teaching-learning method) For measuring young children's scientific attitude and scientific process skills, the checklist test(pre test and post test) used by Ahn, Gyoung Suk(2003).
The collected data were compared and analyzed by conducting the T-Test, ANCOVA.
The result of this study are as follows:
First, children's scientific attitude were significantly higher for the experimental group than comparison group. In particular, the experimental group showed statistically significant difference in the ‘curiosity’, ‘active participation’, ‘openness’, ‘checking evidence critically’, ‘perseverance’, ‘cooperation with others’. But it showed no statistically significant difference in the ‘honesty’. It means that experimental group showed more improved attitude in ‘curiosity’, ‘active participation’, ‘openness’, ‘checking evidence critically’, ‘perseverance’, ‘cooperation with others’.
Second, children's scientific process skills were significantly higher for the experimental group than comparison group. In particular, the experimental group showed statistically significant difference in the ‘observing’, ‘classifying’, ‘predicting’, ‘communicating’ among the sub-factors of scientific process skills. But it showed no statistically significant difference in the ‘measuring’, ‘experimenting’. It means that experimental group showed more improved process skills in ‘observing’, ‘classifying’, ‘predicting’, ‘communicating’.
This result suggest that the chemistry activity based on inquiry approach of science teaching-learning method has positive effect on the improvement of scientific attitude and scientific process skills than expositive approach of science teaching-learning method.
