In interpersonal relations, appearance is an important variable that effects perception and is also related to physical attraction. Information on appearance acts as a crucial basis for forming images. In particular, females are more prone to be fixated on their appearance compared to male and they tend to be more interested on how they are perceived by others. Furthermore, with the increasing influence of the mass media and the acceleration of females participating in society and gaining more expertise, women have growing opportunities to express their images and in result, have become more interested in their appearance.
Makeup can be used to freely express one's self by combining different styles and colors. Therefore, it is an important factor in changing one's appearance and it can emphasize certain parts of the face, while retouching others. Hence, it plays an important role in giving a first impression in interpersonal relationships, as well as in creating one's image.
The eyes play a big part in composing the face and therefore, it is not an overstatement to say that one's impression depends on their eyes. However, the image of one's face can be changed through eye makeup. For this, it is important to create detailed lines and select the right colors by analyzing the form of the eyes. It is important to combine in harmony these various factors.
This study is significant in the fact that it suggests models needed for creating desirable eyes through the objective analysis of the effects of eye makeup techniques and colors for different eye types. In this study, it was presumed that the image of the eyes could be changed in various fashions depending on the eye's formative features and makeup, and the objective of this study was to define the eyes' formative features and the resulting images through experiments according to changes of the eyes forms and makeup.
The contents of this study are as seen below.
Chapter 1 is the introduction that presents the significance and objective of this study.
Chapter 2 is the theoretical background and studies literature on preceding researches on image, makeup techniques, eye makeup colors, etc depending on the formative features of the eyes and the concept of makeup.
Chapter 3 deals with the research method and procedures, and presents the research problem and model. Research was conducted through measurements, surveys and experiments.
Chapter 4 presents the results of the research problems.
First, the face-type category and the formative features of the measurements were compared.
Second, the makeup awareness and preferences of women in their 20s were analyzed.
Third, perception according to changes in the eye form and makeup techniques was analyzed.
Fourth, changes of images according to changes in the eye form and makeup techniques were analyzed.
Fifth, perception of the eyes' form according to makeup color changes was analyzed.
Sixth, changes of images according to changes in the eye form and makeup colors were analyzed.
Chapter 5 presents the conclusion and summarizes the results of the studies. It also suggests makeup for different eye types and presents points to consider.
Measurements, surveys and experiments were performed in this study and the facial image was studied according to the formative features of the eyes and makeup based on these results.
First, the standard index was measured in order to categorize the facial types of women in their 20s and the formative features were analyzed according to the measurement items and measurements that effect the categorization of facial types.
In addition, women in their 20s who begin to put on makeup on a regular basis were studied through questionnaires on their awareness of makeup and their preferred makeup types and colors. Furthermore, the factors that affected their satisfaction level for makeup were also analyzed.
Based on this, positive analysis were made on the interrelation of the formative features of the eyes and makeup via form and image perception experiments based on the eye forms and makeup colors as well as through form and image perception experiments according to changes in they eye form and makeup techniques, in order to study the influences of eye form awareness and image features. Through this, data to be put into practical use in creating makeup images were presented.
In order to solve the research problem, Hangeul SPSS 14.0 was used for data processing, while analyses were made using factor analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA.
First, in order to reduce the number of questions on image perception used in this study, factor analysis using principal component analysis was used. In order to evaluate the reliability of the tied factors, Cronbach's α was found.
Second, in order to study the general features of the target group, a frequency analysis was performed and descriptive analyses were conducted in order to find the basic statistics of the facial measurements.
Third, in order to compare the facial measurements according to the facial types, ANOVA was performed and DUNCAN verification was used for post-hoc analysis.
Fourth, in order to compare the differences of formative perception and image perception according to eye types and color, and eye types and eye shadow techniques, two-way ANOVA was performed and DUNCAN verification was used for post-hoc analysis.
Results of this study are as seen below.
First, after comparing the facial type categories and formative features of measurements, the most common facial features were in the order of round, long and inverted triangle shapes, while there was a noticeable difference between facial types and eye types.
Second, after analyzing the makeup perception and preference for women in their 20s, results showed that they believed that eye makeup greatly affected image changes, while most did not know the colors and makeup techniques that fit them the best, which resulted in dissatisfaction in their eye makeup.
Third, after analyzing the formative perception according to eye types and makeup techniques, in the item for making the eye-to-eye distance short/long for each eye type, it showed that there was an interaction effect.
Fourth, after analyzing image changes according to changes in eye types and makeup techniques, results showed that there was an interaction effect between the different eye types and image making factors.
Fifth, after analyzing the perception of eye formations according to changes in makeup colors, results showed that there was a difference in eye type and changes in makeup colors.
Sixth, after analyzing image changes according to eye type and makeup color changes, there were differences in images according to colors, but there were no differences caused by eye types, showing that there was no interaction effect.
