This study aims to suggest the efficient teaching and studying textbook organization scheme which covers Korean irregular verbs for Korean beginning learners as a second language. At first, this research suggests the definition and categories of Korean irregular verbs. Also it discusses the boundary of irregular verbs and the problem of 'ㄹ‘ and '으’ with the boundary of their usage.
Next, this thesis researches the usage of irregular verbs which are found in the Korean beginner textbooks. The textbooks are used in Korean Language Institutes where Korean is taught at least 200 hours per level. Based on the result of research, the thesis suggests how Korean textbooks organize usage of irregular verbs for beginner learners and gives the detail examples.
The various differences regarding the definition and categorization of irregular verbs have been found in the previous studies.
This thesis claims the different definition of irregular verbs from the definition of Korean grammar considering that learners are foreigners .
According to Korean grammar, those verbs which do not have changes of form are regular verbs during the process of combination of stem and ending. Even though they have the changes of form, if the changes are covered by general phoneme rules, they are regular verbs.
Also those verbs which can not be expected with the usage form are irregular verbs.
In contrast, Korean grammar education argues that those verbs which have no changes of form during the process of combination of stem and ending are regular verbs. If any kinds of changes of form are found in verbs, they are irregular verbs.
Korean grammar sees that the verbs which have changes of form are regular verbs under the explanation of phonology; however, Korean grammar education sees that those verbs with any changes are irregular verbs even though they are explained by phonology because it is easier for foreign leaners to understand the rules based on the changes of form.
There are ten categories about Korean irregular verbs.
ㄷ irregular usage, ㄹ irregular usage, ㅂ irregular usage, ㅅ irregular usage, ㅎ irregular usage, 러 irregular usage, 르 irregular usage, 우 irregular usage, 으 irregular usage, 하다 irregular usage
These verbs are irregular verbs according to Korean grammar education.
’다오‘ -supplement of '주다’-,
’말다‘ -supplement of '않다’-,
’바라다‘ - always used as a irregular verb in text-,
’데리다, 더불다, 말미암다, 즈음하다‘ -used irregularly and limited as a particular form.
However this thesis focuses on the below seven Korean irregular verbs which are found in beginner textbooks because the topic is for beginner learners.
- ㄷ irregular verb, ㄹ irregular verb, ㅂ irregular verb, ㅅ irregular verb, ㅎ irregular verb, 르 irregular verb, 으 irregular verb.
The study summarizes the organization of seven Korean irregular verbs which are found at beginner textbooks. All the results - usage expression, grammar explanation, examples of words, the order of suggesting irregular verbs - are different from the textbooks of five institutions. This implies there are not standardized grammar systems for foreigners. Based on the research from the textbooks of Korean language institutes, the thesis suggests the organization scheme of textbooks for irregular verbs and detail examples.
