This is an action research on storytelling by the teacher and the follow-up discussion activities, which was conducted with elementary first graders. The purpose of the research was placed on making children maintain interest in reading and further bringing about improvement in teaching and qualitative changes in the teacher in elementary educational settings by observing patterns and problems of children's reactions showing in the process of the action research and devising improvement strategies, According to this purpose, the researcher practiced storytelling after setting up the following research questions, and then did the follow-up discussion activities.
First, how do patterns of children's behaviors develop in storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities?
Second, how does the teacher's reflective practice develop in storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities?
In order to resolve those questions, the researcher selected 8 and 6 books for the first and second sessions respectively, appropriate for storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities, and conducted an action research by designing an activity plan. The researcher analyzed and interpreted the results after collecting various materials regarding the children's interactive reactions during the practice of storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities, such as copies, the researcher's notes, interview records and literature.
Problems derived from the first session of storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities are as the following. In sum, first, there were the difficulties of interrupted activities caused by such as slanderers, spoilers, and talebearers. Second, since the teacher introduced a certain way of activities not taking the children's levels of ability, who were experiencing difficulties in discussing due to lack of linguistic expression into consideration, accordingly it caused the result that some children could not participate in the discussion activities actively. Third, the teacher wanted teacher-led activities or correct answers to the children, forgetting that she was not only a researcher but also a participant.
The researcher practiced the second session of storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities through the process of reflecting on the problems appearing during the first session, modifying, complementing and redesigning the program by analyzing according to activity strategies. In order to induce various reactions from the children, the researcher added supplementary activities, and then made children devise discussion strategies by themselves. As a result of the second activities, children came to show higher levels of reaction to the contents of fairy tales, expanded their ideas, adapted to the way of discussion, and presented positive changes in attitudes toward reading as storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities were repeated. Consequently, children's behavioral patterns resulted from the action research on storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities are as below.
First, the children came to express their ideas by using a rich vocabulary and show changes in story composition abilities. In addition, the children displayed subjective thinking by showing some doubt about the identity of fairy tales. They compared and accepted the standpoint of actors in fairy tales and others in the realities, and through this they showed attitudes accepting that others' feelings and behaviors can be different from theirs. They showed development in visual literacy in the process of seeing pictures on fairy tale books.
Second, the children showed attitudes listening to the others' opinions, and also came to have attitudes making and keeping rules regarding discussion. They showed patterns enhancing problem-solving thinking by suggesting ways of resolving problems though having conversation, getting out of a passive way of thinking.
Third, they showed enhanced interest in the book itself, i. e. they not only read books but also used those as a medium for playing. Interest in pictures was also increased, and accordingly they could increase understanding of fairy tales, and showed patterns learning desirable reading attitudes though the process of reading and having conversations with peers. They started showing changes that they overcame fear of written language and were attracted to the pleasure of reading.
In the first session, the teacher showed attitudes demanding correct answers to the children, and wanting teacher-led activities. In addition, she had difficulties in scaffolding, i. e. she did not direct discussion appropriately due to not taking the children's level into consideration. By reflecting on this problem, the teacher avoided thinking by her subjective criteria, and had opportunities to meet the children considering the children's point of view, and also they went through the process of reinterpreting the role of the teacher as a scaffold designer focusing on interactions between the teacher and the community of the whole children. These changes are interpreted as the development of the teacher into the teacher who helps children develop though meeting the children in a new way. Accordingly, the researcher found herself feeling the pleasure of creating phronesis (prudence or practice wisdom) actively though continuous observing and questioning, and developing with children.
Putting these results together, it could be identified that there showed improvement in discussion skills and changes in reading attitudes among the children through the action research on storytelling and the follow-up discussion activities, and also showed positive improvement in teaching/learning processes and positive changes in the researcher herself through reflection. Further research is expected to be conducted constantly.
