In this paper, we analyzed how the irony had been conducted in the education of Korean as a foreign language and drew up a educational program for the irony.
In the first chapter, we showed that it is necessary to teach the irony to learners who study Korean as a foreign language. Because the irony is frequently used in everyday language and plays various linguistic roles, it should be discussed in the education program of Korean.
In the chapter 2, we defined the irony and discussed its roles and realization aspects. We categorized roles of the irony into intentional expression and customary expression in terms of the way to use the irony, a speaker intentionally uses it with specific objectives or customarily uses it as a everyday language.
Intentional expression has six different roles such as emphasis, sarcasm and sneer, retort, rebuke, admonition, doubt and conjecture, justification and reason. There are three roles of customary expression such as request for consent, proposal and praise. And we analyzed characteristics of each roles.
Realization aspects of the irony can be classified into phonological level, inflectional level, vocabulary level, syntactic layer, and pragmatic level. The irony which is realized in the syntactic level has shown the greatest productivity.
In the chapter 3, we analyzed the irony which can be found in the teaching materials textbooks for Korean education program. Five text books which are published by institutes for Korean education were used as the level from elementary to professional. We checked out the irony found in the each textbook and analyzed the characteristics of them.
Most of the irony played roles as the intentional expression, especially emphasis and retort, in these text books. However, sarcasm and sneer, and request for consent, proposal and praise can be found in the few textbooks.
We could not find the irony in the phonological level and pragmatic level. The irony realized in the inflectional level could be found in the all over the textbooks. But the irony realized in vocabulary level and syntactic level was differently presented in the each textbook.
In the result of analysis, we found five problems for the irony in the Korean education program. First, there are great differences of vocabulary, infection and syntax to realize the irony among different textbooks. Second, several textbooks only gave illustrative sentences without detailed explanation for roles and characteristics of the irony. Third, although the irony has similar syntactic structure, it was separated into different grammar sections. Fourth, textbooks are not able to reflect phonological characteristics of the irony. Fifth, the irony realized in the pragmatic level was not reflected in the textbook.
In the chapter 4, we gave the list of the irony for each stages from elementary to professional level. In addition, we presented application methodologies, which can be classified into practical situations, reading materials and audio-visual materials to teach the irony and class models for the each methodology. These methodologies and class models must be practically helpful to teach the irony.
