In this research, students' development process of mathematical concepts in accordance with their explanations, questions, and justifications of mathematical thinking, the process of formation of discourses that encouraged students' explanations, questions, and justifications of mathematical thinking, and the role of the teacher that promoted students' development of mathematical concepts in the classroom discourses were investigated through the discourse focused on mathematical concepts or problem solving.
I organized heterogeneous groups targeting the first graders in middle school who belong to the school that I worked and used a case study method since the research was to study the process of discourses in classroom. In the preliminary research, the classroom discourses for several months in 2006 were studied, using the analysis frame of 'levels of the Math-Talk learning community' based on Vygotsky's 'teaching-learning' theory and 'social constructivism'. In result, new analysis frame of discourses were made which consisted of from level 0 to level 4 in three sections of 'Explaining', 'Questioning', and 'Justifying of mathematical thinking'.
By participating in the classroom discourses focused on mathematical concepts or processes of thinking, that is, by comparing and contrasting each other's problem-solving strategies through students' explanations, questions and justifications of mathematical thinking, they were classifying and abstracting mathematical concepts and forming them. In that course, I observed that the progress of forming a true concept was shown through thinking in complexes from unorganized categories. Also, I encouraged classroom discourse using teacher's restatement or feedback in its beginning stage of researching, but gradually became to use inquiring-opening questions.
The classroom discourse was changed from the pattern of interaction between the teacher and students to the interaction between students themselves. Also in the process of discourse, the cyclic pattern that students discussed themselves, sharing mathematical knowledges took place and the level of discourse was also improved from level 0 & level 1 showing in the early stage of the classroom discourse of were advanced to level 2, 3 and level 4 in latter stage of the discourse. Especially, in this process, I verified the teacher, myself, to be ready to support and help but became peripheral, and the students gave rise to discussion, playing key roles as peer-learners and peer-tutors during the classroom discourse.
It was evidenced that students' development of mathematical concepts was shown in the classroom discourse focused on mathematical concepts or process of thinking by teacher's roles as follows: making profitable environment where students could explain, question and justify their thinking freely, presenting some open assignments in which students could investigate mathematical concepts or basic grounds of a principle, giving some inquiring questions which were considered the personal gaps between students who participated in discourse, and providing continuous feedback through the analysis of teaching and learning.
