The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the gender and hearing ability of high schoolers with hearing impairments and without any disabilities to their stressors, stress-coping patterns and school adjustment. The subjects in this study were 255 academic high school boys and girls who included hard of hearing, deaf-and-dumb and nondisabled students. After a survey was conducted, the following findings were given:
First, concerning the relationship of gender and hearing ability to stressors, the stressors of the nondisabled students were larger than those of the deaf-and-dumb students, and the stressors of the boys and girls with hard of hearing were greater than those of the deaf-mutes. And the nondisabled boys were exposed to more stressors than the nondisabled girls. Specifically, the non- disabled students better took care of stresses with their relationship with parents, family problems, relationship with teachers and school life than the deaf-mutes. The nondisabled students were more stressed out than the hard of hearing students due to their academic standing and studies, and the hard of hearing students faced more stress with their academic standing and studies than the deaf-mutes. Among the disabled students, the boys had more stress than the girls due to their academic standing and studies, and in the event of the deaf-mutes, the girls did that more than the boys with their academic standing and studies.
Among the high school boys, the nondisabled students suffered more stress with dating than the deaf-mutes. In the event of the high school girls, the hard of hearing students felt more stress than the nondisabled students with dating. In the case of the nondisabled students, the boys were more stressed with dating than the girls.
Second, as for the relationship of gender and hearing ability to stress- coping patterns, the nondisabled students coped with it better than the deaf-mutes. In particular, the former relied on more problem- centered coping than the latter, and wishful thinking was more prevailing among the nondisabled students than among the hard of hearing and deaf-and-dumb students.
Third, regarding the relationship of gender and hearing ability to school adjustment, there was no disparity between the high school boys and girls and among the hard of hearing, deaf-and-dumb and nondisabled high schoolers.
Given the findings of the study, there are some suggestions:
It's not an easy task to determine what engenders differences among people in their state of mind, coping styles and adjustment methods, but there are basically two different things that should be taken into account: genetic and environmental factors. In brief, genetic and environmental factors could respectively be defined as one's unique characteristics and significant others who have an enormous impact on him or her. Therefore it's required to develop separate questionnaires that cater to different groups of individuals with different characteristics, such as hard of hearing people or students. Prolonged research efforts should be directed into finding out the relationship of culture, economy, religion, habits, academic credential, occupation, age and family size to stressors, coping patterns and adjustment and determining the effects of stress-related education.
