The study looked into the difference in children's self-esteem and mother's receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions by children's background variables(gender, age). The study also examined the relationship between mothers's receptive attitude toward children's self-esteem. By doing so, the study has an objective of providing help for parental education.
In order to achieve the above purpose, the contents of this study included the following question.
1. Are there differences in the children's self-esteem by the children's background variables(gender, age)?
2. Are there differences in the mothers' receptive attitudes toward children's emotional expressions by the children's background variables(gender, age)?
3. What correlation does the children's self-esteem and mother's receptive attitude toward the children's emotional expressions have?
The study included children from 3 years of age to 5 years of age at Kindergarten located in Il-San.
Questionnaires about mothers' receptive attitude toward child emotional expressions and questionnaires about children's self-esteem were distributed to the 350 mothers and their children.
I used 210 sincerely answered copies as a data of analysis. The measuring tool of this research was PACES (Parent Attitude toward Children's Expressiveness Scale), which was developed by Saarni(1990) and verified.
Saarni's purpose was to elucidate how much difference mother's attitude toward the children's expressiveness is brougth out. I used PACES which was translated by Kim Eun Kyung and used it for my research.
Also, The questionnaire about children's self-esteem was developed by Hater & Pike, was modified by Kim Yuong Sook, and modified again to fit this study for accuracy of response.
According to respective research problems, I used SPSS for window 12.0 as a statistical analysis.
In order to analyze the general background, the results were produced in frequency and percentile. In order to find out the children's self-esteem and the mother's receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions, the average and standard deviation were obtained.
The two-way ANOVA was executed in order to examine the differences in children's self-esteem and mother's receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions by children's background variables(gender, age).
In order to verify the differences produced by the factor analysis, the Scheffés test was used.
The Pearson's produce moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis were produced in order to examine the relationship between children's self-esteem and mother's receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions.
The major results of this study were summarized as follows :
First, Regarding the children's gender and age, I could not determine any difference in the children's self-esteem.
Second, The result of verification shows that according to the mother's difference of acceptance of the children's expressiveness produced meaningful differences, depending on the children's gender and age. The results of the study show that mothers are more strict to boy's negative emotional expression than girl's negative emotional expression. Also, mothers are more strict to 4 years-old than 3 years-old.
Third, A mother's rigorous attitude toward children's negative expression for children's gender, intellectual self-esteem, physical self-esteem, children's cognitional self-esteem was positively related to children's self-esteem and children's cognitional self-esteem toward mother was negatively related to children's age.
Also, children's intellectual self-esteem and physical self-esteem were affected by the mother's rigorous attitude toward children's positive expression. On the other hand, children's intellectual self-esteem and physical self-esteem were positively affected by the mother's rigorous attitude toward children's negative expression.
Children's cognitional self-esteem toward mother was negatively affected by the children's age and the mother's rigorous attitude toward children's negative expression.
Children's cognitional self-esteem was positively affected by the mother's rigorous attitude toward children's negative expression.
This paper shows that the children's self-esteem and mother's receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions are related. Also, it shows that the mother's proper receptive attitude toward children's emotional expressions are very important for the children's self-esteem.
