The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of participation motivation and sports immersion and their co-relationship among water ski enthusiasts. Two hundred thirty seven water ski enthusiasts completed the questionnaires and their reposes were analyzed using t-test, One-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis.
The results showed that, first, with regard to the participation motivation, pleasure, condition, health/fitness, external display, lack of motivation was the major motivation factors among the male participants when compared to the female water ski enthusiasts. Also, pleasure, condition, social relation and health/fitness were significant factors when water ski enthusiasts with the age range from 30 to 40 participated the sports. Further, the motivation factor of social relation was significantly high among the participants with 3 to 4 years of water ski experience. In addition, water skier with vocation showed higher level of motivation of pleasure, condition, social relation, and health/fitness.
Secondly, none of the sports immersion factors was significantly different between/among gender, age, sports experience, or existence of vocation.
Finally, there were significant correlation between participation motivation and sports immersion. Intrinsic motivation factors such as skill improvement and pleasure and external motivation factors such as social relation and lack of motivation were significantly correlated with cognitive immersion. Especially, the relation between skill improvement and the feeling of achievement was the strongest. In addition, the external motivation of condition and the internal motivation of skill improvement and feeling of achievement were highly correlated with the behavioral immersion.
