The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of story-making activities using picture books on emotion recognition and prosocial behavior of young children.
The research questions were the following.
1. Are there any differences in young children's emotion recognition according to whether they have story-telling activities using picture books or not?
2. Are there any differences in young children's prosocial behavior according to whether they have story-telling activities using picture books or not?
3. Are there any differences between young boys and girls according to whether they have story-telling activities using picture books or not?
The subjects of this study were 40 five-year-olds(20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group). The first experiment group read the picture book and story-making activities and the control group only read the picture book. This study was carried out for 7 weeks. The processing of research data was conducted by using SPSS 12.0 and we conducted ANCOVA analysis to find the effect of experimental treatment.
The results of this study were the following;
Firstly, there are significant differences between the experimental and control group in young children's emotion recognition.
Secondly, there are significant differences between the experimental and control group's prosocial behavior.
Thirdly, there are no differences between the boys and girls in young children's emotion recognition or prosocial behavior.
The result of this study indicates that story-making activities using picture books has a positive effect on the improvement of children's emotion recognition and prosocial behavior. These findings can be used for developing story-making activities using picture books in the educational field.
