With the increasing of adolescent's depression rate, it is getting more important in the society than any other each because we can predict the things with regard to the suicide, misconduct, juvenile drinking, school-inadaptability.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is that try to find protection of depression and solution for teenagers which are experiencing high depression. however, we could not compare the result of research because we do not have any nationwide research though the research about middle school students depression are continuing somewhere in our country.
For this aim, I studied synthetical relation among the depression and the factors like a stress, social support and self-esteem which indicated as an effective factors in the previous study. I made use of testing tools such as Children's Depression Inventory, Stress Inventory, Society-esteem Inventory and Social support Appraisal.
For this study, I surveyed 570 students (middle school 1~3 grade students') in seoul and cheon nam region, SPSS WIN 12.0 is used in the analysis, and I took statistics the result using descriptives, T-test, ANOVA, Person's correction, Stepwise regression, regression.
The summarized results are as follows.
1. stress, social support, self-esteem and the level of the depression
The first, the degree of the average stress is hard to find differences to grade. the girls feel stress higher than boys feel and cheon nam region is much higher than Seoul region.
The second, the degree of the average social support could not find differences to gender and grade. also Seoul region is higher than cheon nam region.
The third, the degree of the average self-esteem could not find differences to gender. between 2nd grade and 3nd grade have difference meaningfully. and Seoul region is higher than cheon nam region.
The fourth, the degree of the average level of depression could not find differences to gender and grade. the result shows that cheon nam region is higher than Seoul region.
2. The effects of stress, social support, self-esteem on the depression
For the study of the total effects that each variable affects the depression, I carried out the stepwise regression of those variables. Eventually, the order of the effective psychological factor is school-academic self-esteem, home-parents self-esteem, friends-support, social-peer self-esteem, teachers-support, stress related to the body.
Moreover, the result of effect of depression classify according to sex, grade and region shows difference between the factors. The effect of the psychological and social factors on depression by sex showed that, there is difference between social-peer self-esteem, teachers-support and depression for girls compared to boys. And the effect of the psychological and social factors on depression by grade showed that, there is difference between stress related to the body and depression for 2~3nd grade compared to 1nd grade. And the effect of the psychological and social factors on depression by region showed that, there is difference between teachers-support, stress related to the body and have more depression in the meaningful rate for cheon nam region compared to Seoul region.
Totally, seeing the result, the middle school students depression is caused by complex factors not a particular one, especially, social support and self-esteem are the main factors that affect the middle school students depression. Among these factors are the most effective factors of the depression. From this result, I suggest that we should help the youth make self-esteem by reviving the self-character from school, family and friends, and enforce the network of social-support for prevent the middle school students depression.
Also, as a result of the above writings, the depression is appeared differently according to the sex and grade, it is needed to make educational program for the counsel and prevention of support base such as sex and grade.
In conclusion, it should be offer to political approach and constant service of education centre or urban society considering the weakness of psychological factors of students in a small town and a rural area.
