This study lays its purpose on providing basic material for vitalizing yoga programs by verifying and comparing the effect of participation in Hatha yoga programs on mental health among middle-aged women, and accordingly the subjects of the study were 40 middle-aged women residing in Seodaemun-gu, and Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, divided into an experimental group with 20 persons and a control group with 20 persons.
In order to measure mental health status before and after participation in Hatha yoga programs among middle-aged women through pre-/post-tests, and then to compare the results, the researcher used the SCL-90 (the Symptom Checklist-90) and applied a Hatha yoga program for 12 weeks. For data analysis, the SPSS Win 12.0 version was employed, and frequency analysis for the subjects' general characteristics, t-test for analysis on differences between the experimental and control groups according to the application of the Hatha yoga program, and average comparison and covariance analysis for analysis on differences in results before and after the Hatha yoga program application, were conducted respectively, with the .05 significance level for all statistical verification.
Accordingly, as a result of statistical verification of the effect of participation in the Hatha yoga program on mental health among middle-aged women, the following results were derived.
First, the experimental group participating in the Hatha yoga program showed improvement in mental health in terms of such as somatization, depression, and psychotic disorders, compared with the control group.
Second, the experimental group participating in the Hatha yoga program showed improvement in mental health in terms of such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, after the program application compared with the results before the program.
Putting these results together, it could be said that the yoga program has great contribution to the mental health of middle-aged women, and also has positive effects on their mental health. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it is expected that further study would be conducted on various yoga programs for enhancing physical and psychological health among middle-aged women.
