Determinants of the Quality of Life
in Three Elderly Cohorts

(Abstract)
The purpose of the study was to analyze structural patterns of the factors of QOL(quality of life) and determinants of QOL in three elderly cohorts, considering the diversity of the elderly. Three cohorts of elderly subjects, aged 55-64 years(young-old), 65-74 years(old), and 75 and older(old-old), were used as an organizing framework based on the previous studies. Participants were 593 elderly over 55 years old who reside in Daegu City and Kyungbuk Province and the interview using a structured questionnaire was conducted. The data is analyzed utilizing SPSS 15.0 program.
The findings of the study revealed that the level of QOL in three elderly cohorts were significantly different. Specifically, the level of QOL in the young-old is higher than the old and the old-old. In terms of subjective satisfaction of life areas in three elderly cohorts, young-old showed higher satisfaction in family life, economic life, job and work, and information life than the old and the old-old. The old and the old-old showed no differences in subjective satisfaction in continuing education, while the young-old showed higher subjective satisfaction. In the area of health life, the level of subjective satisfaction was different in three elderly cohorts. The young-old perceived higher subjective satisfaction than the old and the old-old and the old were higher subjective satisfaction than the old-old, In the area of leisure life, the young-old and the old have the same subjective satisfactions, whereas the young-old and the old have higher satisfaction than the old-old. On the other hand, the satisfaction of residence life, life environment, government policy and social participation shows no differences in three elderly cohort, which showed the elderly cohorts perceived similar levels of satisfaction.
Second, structural patterns of the factors of QOL(QOL) the structural patterns of the QOL was analyzed in two factors. The young-old and the old were consisted of two factors As for the young-old and the old, the satisfaction with the economic life, residence life. life environment, family life, job and work is the primary factor composed of the QOL. So it can be predicted that the young-old and the old prefer similar life area. On the other hand, concerning the constructs of the QOL for the old-old, the primary factors are life environment, residence life. family life and economic life and so the old-old show different preferences from the old.
Third, the effects of the physical, psychological, social and economic characteristics on the QOL for the elderly are analyzed and compared. The subjective health level of the physical aspects affects the QOL for all the elderly cohorts while the function of life activities affects only the old and the old-old. In addition, self-esteem and depression affect the QOL for all the elderly cohorts and participation in leisure activities have an influence on all the elderly cohorts. Social support affects the QOL for the young-old and the old. Finally, the subjective economic level and economic difficulties appear as important variations predicting the QOL for all the elderly cohorts.
Fourth, in consequence of analyzing and comparing the relative importance of factors affecting the QOL for the elderly cohorts, the most important factor which affects the QOL for the young-old is the subjective economic level and the second most important ones are economic difficulties and then the subjective health level and social support in order. As for the old, the most important factor is the social support, The next ones are the subjective economic level, participation in leisure activities, the subjective health level and the economic difficulties in order. Finally, the most important factors affecting the QOL for the old-old are the subjective economic level, economic difficulties and the objective disease career.
