This study analyzed the stress of grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families, where grandchildren were raised by the grandparents in place of their adult children who were separated due to divorce, death, or the squandering of fortunes or who were double income couples experiencing increasing women’s economic activities, and it analyzed the influential factors in their stress. For this study, the 130 grandparents in Jinju and Masan, Changwon were interviewed directly by researchers of this study. For statistica method, this study employed a one-way ANOVA, correlation, regression analysis.
Study results are summarized as follows:
First, as a result of a one-way ANOVA, there was a significant difference in grandparents’ stress according to the reason for the occurrence of the grandparent-grandchildren families. Thus, as a result of the Scheffe post-test, there was a significant difference between the stress of grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families which occurred due to the double income of adult children, and that of grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families which occurred due to the divorce of the adult children.
Second, as a result of regression analysis of each independent variable, the reason for the occurrence of the grandparent-grandchildren families, the number of children, the ability of the grandparents to lead an ordinary life, the financial burden in raising children, the private instrumental support, and the public instrumental support significantly affect the stress of the grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families. The stress of the grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families caused by the family disorganization of adult children was higher, and the stress was higher as the number of children they raised increased. The lower the ability of the grandparents to lead an ordinary life was and the higher the financial burden for raising children was, the higher the stress of the grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families was. Also, the lower the private instrumental support was and the lower the public instrumental support was, the higher the grandparents’ stress was.
Third, as a result of the regression analysis of a comprehensive model, the ability of grandparents to lead an ordinary life, the financial burden in raising children, and the public instrumental support significantly affects the stress of the grandparents in a grandparent-grandchildren families.
The institutional and practical implications for reducing the stress of the grandparents in a grandparent-headed home may include the following.
First, the level of public instrumental support offered by a social welfare organization and the government was shown significantly influential to the grandparents’ stress. Accordingly, it is necessary to extend support to grandparent-grandchildren families and give benefits to many more grandparent-grandchildren families through an improvement in the administration system and an increase in related human resources.
Second, the「Single Parent Family Support Law」, which came into effect beginning in January 2008, limits the age of parents to be 65 or over. This may cause a problem in that the family may not be subject to the law despite a difficult financial situation. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare plans for grandparent-grandchildren families where grandparents raise children as the primary care giver without limiting their ages and to receive support based on their financial levels.
Third, the financial burden in raising grandchildren was shown to significantly affect the grandparents’ stress. Consequently, it is necessary to utilize, support, and expand current after-school programs so that grandchildren in grandparent-grandchildren families can use the programs, and to develop a program for diverse experiential learning aimed at grandparent-grandchildren families. Plus, there is also a need to offer a fair learning opportunity through the dispatch of learning helpers or the supporter of learning materials, or learning on the Internet. In addition, it is necessary to sponsor services and to support necessary goods by discovering sponsors.
Fourth, as a result of the research, the ability of grandparents to lead an ordinary life was found to significantly affect the grandparents’ stress. Therefore, it is necessary to offer necessary housekeeping support not only to grandparents but also to grandchildren through a comprehensive care system aimed at the grandparent-grandchildren families, and to secure professionals to deliver quality service.
