Today, the mental health has a great deal of impact on individuals and the society surrounding. Taking a clinical and developmental approach to mental health, bibliotherapy should be conducted in the viable level to exert influence on social phenomenon including individuals.
This research considers that the mental health of college students, being the potential leaders of our society, is important both at individual and social level, focusing on the bibliotherapy for female students as their mental health directly affects 'mother and child'. In the meanwhile, dealing with female college students who are having difficulties making a normal living because of negative emotion caused by mental instability, a wholesome understanding on the recovery process is to be considered prior to the situational factors.
Therefore, this research is to propose a way of bibliotherapical intercession by stages and patterns as to examine the recovery process of students with negative emotion by using the grounded theoretical method.
This research collected materials through focus-interview, participant observation and book reports of 4 experiments involving female college students aged from 21 to 23, all having emotional and psychological difficulties. The collected materials were analyzed by the grounded theoretical method from Strauss and Corbin.
The results in open coding were found 148 concepts, 32 subcategories and 12 categories.
The recovery process of female students with negative emotion involved causal factors such as “recognition of hidden wound”, “sense of inferiority”, and “difficulty in forming relationships”, as well as contextual factors like “sympathetic attitude”, which altogether brought about the core phenomenon, “pursuit for healthy ego”. This core phenomenon induced to recovering the bright and positive attitude through using the strategies of 'self insight' and application of 'management plan', influenced by such incoherent conditions as 'intimate surroundings' and 'support system patterns'.
And as time passed, the recovery process appeared in four stages; 'issues recognition', 'emotional responses', 'issue solution' and 'self application'.
Issue Recognition Stage is understanding where their wounds came from, how much they unconsciously felt pains from it. Through this stage, the students are able to perceive their obstacles, leading them to feel the need to make a change.
Emotional Responses Stage when the actual emotional change occurs after recognizing the psychological problems such as the hidden wound, inferiority complex, and human-relationship conflicts.
Issue Solution Stage entails the seeking for methods in detail to deal with their problems and to recover their positive attitude. At this stage, different solutions are considered to develop a concrete strategy.
Finally, during the Self Application Stage the participants reach solutions by understanding how the above states are applied to their personal situations, how it affects their and what they should do to put together the psychological problems cognized as general sentiments.
Two patterns were found in seeking the bright and positive attitude: Cognitive Response Pattern and Observative Pattern’.
Those who follow Cognitive Pattern are active in pursuit of 'self-insight', because of active attitude on understanding their problems recognized. Solutions are applied actively as well; a consistent change of emotion and new understanding are found, and their recovery clearly visible.
The Observative Pattern takes passive approach in pursuit of ‘self-insight’, because of passive attitude on understanding their problems recognized. Solutions are applied passively as well; a temporary change of emotion and few new understanding are found, and there is only a slight recovery.
The Results provided the theoretical foundation to bibliotherapy by proposing how it should be processed in stages and according to patterns, when female college students recognize their emotional and psychological problems, and strive to deal with it to recover bright and positive attitude.
