The concept of Family resilience would be identified on Strength-based and Stress-based perspective also included Ecological and Developmental perspective. Family resilience was for the first time in Korea applied to the foster care families and it revealed its realities of foster families.
The results of hypothesis testing, 5 hyptheses among 9 were well verified for psychological and social adjustment of foster children. And another one hypothesis was highly explained as statistical significance(p=.074). So, family resilience have well affected to foster children in psychological and social adjustment.
The research questions of this study are followed.
< Research question 1> This study analyzes the realities of family resilience in Korean foster families.
< Research question 2> Family resilience (Belief system, Organization patterns, Communication processes) in foster families will influence the psychological and social adjustment of foster children.
The survey data were collected from 304 foster families by non-probability purposive sampling in nation wide. The survey tools are measured by scales of belief system, organization patterns, communication processes and psychological-emotion problem, behavior problem, social competence. The collected data were analyzed with frequency, descriptive statstics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchy regression analysis by SPSS/PC 14.0. The results of study are followed;
1. The realities of family resilience in Korean foster families.
Family resilience was ranked at 2.70 of 4 full point. Belief system was at 2.73, organization patterns was at 2.62, and communication processes was at 2.75.
Among the 9 sub-constitutions(family control, positive valueness , moral and religion, flexbility, connectedness, family resources, clarity, response of emontion, problem solution) of family resilience, the positive valuness in the highest was ranked at 2.89 and family resources in the lowest was at 2.19. In the previous studies of Kim, Mee-Ok(2001), Lee Sun-Ae(2004), Kim An-Ja(2005), family resources lowest was ranked, which means the clients are needed to be supported financially.
This study shows that family resilience in Korean foster families gets higher, stronger if family get monthly more income, they are protestants in religion, they are highly educated, they are specialists, administrators, finalcial situation are stabler and their age are in the 40's.
In the foster period it ranked highly thru 6 months to one year at belief system 3.07, organization patterns 2.87, communication processes 3.00. Since over 5 years of foster period family resilience got point in the lowest. Due to above results of foster period, it would be relevant to foster parent types. Because kinship foster care parents get longer period to raise the foster children realistically.
2. The results of hypotheses testing.
Hypothesis 1. The higher family resilience(belief system, organization patterns,
communication processes) get, psycho-emotional adjustment (withdrawal,
depression·anxiety) of foster children will get lower.
As the results of correlation and regressional analysis , hypothesis 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3 were well positively verified for family resilience to influence the psycho-emotional adjustment in foster children.
Hypothesis 2. The more family resilience(belief system, organization patterns, communication processes) get, behavior adjustment(deliquency, aggression)of foster children will get lower.
As the results of correlation and regressional analysis, hypothesis 2-2 was well positively verified for organization patterns to influence the behavior adjustment in foster children. Hypothesis 2-3 was well explained as the significance of p=.074, too. In fact communication processes would weakly influence the behavior adjustment of children.
Hypothesis 3. The stronger family resilience(belief system, organization patterns, commnication processes) get, social competence(social life, social activity) will be better.
As the results of correlation and regressional analysis, hypothesis 3-2 was positively verified for organization patterns to influence the social competence of foster children.
This study shows, especially organization patterns of family resilience have influenced psycho-social adjustment(withdrawal, depression· anxiety, deliquency, aggression, social life, social activity) of foster children. Organization patterns implied family resources would be effective tool to confront psycho-social adjustment of foster children.
Conclusionally, to improve the psycho-social adjustment of foster children, education relevant to family resilience specifically concerning with flexibility, connectedness, family resources. To treat the bahavior problem(deliquency, aggression) of foster children, treatmental foster family are necessary to utilize foster home more. To prevent the needed children, family strengthening education, and social security network building are helpful for the child welfare services.
