This study aimed to offer data to improve the quality of physical education of a elementary school by analyzing and suggesting how the teachers perceived barriers to physical education such as perception of teachers ·students · administrators, the actual condition of the physical class, the whole circumstances of physical education.
To achieve this aims, we gathered the information by posing a question to 300 elementary school teachers. We got the result from the final 275 response papers as followings by performing frequency and cross tabulation papers except the 17 ones that were written wrong or lack validity from 292 response papers.
First, the teachers perceived it was one of barriers to physical education for the children to prefer only the interesting fields and to be mischievous in the class or not to concentrate on teacher's saying. However, according to the teacher's point of view, children perceived physical education was important and their extent to participation was high.
Second, the teachers were guiding the barriers of teachers to physical education, focusing on the game activities and physical strength activities for the reason that it made the respect of students' interest or opinions and the content of teaching easy. Also, teachers neglected health activities and expression activities for the reason that they lacked the ability to guide them and it was difficult to select a subject matter of learning activity.
Also, it took much time to prepare the physical class and there was a difficulty in preparing teaching tools, which was analyzed as a cause that obstructs the management of curriculum. Also, it turned out that teachers lacked practical training skills in that the rate of teachers who responded that the subject with their confidence was 2~3 of 6 fields was high, and the rate of participation of teachers in training related to physical education was low.
However, teachers perceived some extent of importance to physical education was rather high, and they understood the physical education curriculum. In addition, they knew the content concerning guidance in learning and abode by the physical class time and studied the teaching materials.
Third, teachers pointed out that the place keeping teaching tools was too far and there were difficulties in carrying them, so the rate of utilizing them was low. Moreover, it was not enough to expand teaching tools and facilities because of loss caused by neglecting them. Also, the season factor might cause an obstacle of physical class when it was difficult to have the class in outdoors because there were cases that it was rainy or severe cold, intense heat. However, teachers perceived there were not enough teaching tools and facilities but it didn't cause inconvenience.
Forth, teachers perceived that parents of students tended to neglect physical education but administrators of the school were interested in physical education. Also, there was a lack of financial support for physical class and expanding facilities, so there was a problem for managing physical class. Absent of physical class because of preparing for the events of the school was considered as a barrier to the class of physical education.
In conclusion, the factors of children were that they preferred the fields that they were interested in and they did mischief in the class or didn't concentrate on teacher's saying. As the factors of teachers, there were placing too much emphasis on only a few subjects, lacking of ability for guiding each subject or practical techniques, complicated preparing for the class, the indifference toward the physical education training. As the factors of circumstances, there were a difficulty of carrying and keeping teaching tools, bad weather that were not adaptable to physical activity in outdoors. As the factors of administrators, there were parents' negligence toward physical education, insufficient finances to physical education, the absent because of school events.
