Appreciation activity, as the most fundamental element of music, refers to concentrate on listening to music and to conceive. However, teaching musical appreciation is less emphasized than teaching singing and musical instruments in practical music classes and the methods of teaching simply provide little information of the characteristics of songs while repeating listening to the songs. Teachers and students are less likely to have an opportunity to develop their thinking activities during the process of listening to music repeatedly.
Therefore, the researcher introduces the exemplary learning model for appreciating music and the questioning of teachers with regard to each stage by applying Dewey's reflective thinking base on the purpose of thinkable music appreciation classes.
Dewey insisted that human life is experience and he saw reflective thinking as the best way to grow and develop when experience was reconstructed or knowledge was acquired. Reflective thinking is applied to the process of reconstruction, reorganization, and change and the growth is meaningful because of thinking process. In order to make experience meaningful, thinking must be intervened in that although it is unsettled.
For these reasons, the learning plan for appreciating music based on Dewey's reflective thinking is prepared. Dewey's reflective thinking processes < suggestion - intellectualization - leading idea or hypothesis - reasoning - testing > were applied to musical appreciationand reconstructed into 6 stages <listening to music - responding to music - perceiving music - describing music - understanding music - valuing music>.
Musical experience becomes a meaningful aesthetic experience on the basis of musical thinking. The fundamental concept of music education is to help students consider music as music itself. That indicates that music appreciation classes applying Dewey's reflective thinking process give a meaningful suggestion to contribute the growth of music along with building students' musical thinking.
Questioning, one of the most representative strategies of teachinglearning as a way to develop musical thinking through students' reflective thinking process in a practical music appreciation class is established. Questioning applied to the reflective thinking process allows students to have a motivation for learning, maintains and develops their musical thinking by stimulation. Furthermore, students can experience music and have an opportunity to build knowledge of music in the class.
Teaching plans for appreciating music were established based on the reflective thinking process by selecting appreciating songs in 4th grade of elementary school as title songs based on 7th educational process and questioning with regard to stages is suggested.
