The purpose of this study was to develop solution-focused group counseling program to enhance self-esteem and school adjustability of elementary school students in a deficient family. According to the purpose, the research questions were as follows. First, what contents should the solution-focused group counseling program be constructed? Second, what is the effect of a solution-focused group counseling program on the students' self-esteem in a deficient family? Third, what is the effect of a solution-focused group counseling program on the students' school adjustability in a deficient family?
The subject of the study were consisted of the experimental and control group by 8 students of a deficient family respectively among 4th, 5th, 6th grade in A elementary school, Chungju city, Chungbuk. After conducting pre-examination with the experimental and control group, the experimental group was treated with a solution-focused group counseling of 10 sessions and then given post-examination. Control group was just conducted post-examination without the treatment of the program.
For the further experiment, being based on the treatment intervention 5-steps model of a solution-focused counseling by Kral(1993), the program was restructured with the model of school counseling program by Kang Jin-ryeong and Yu Hyeong-keun(2007), the model of my class group counseling by Kang Tae-sim(2007) and the materials of the early researches.
The results of this experiment were as follows. First, the self-esteem scores of the experimental group that participated in the program were statically more increased than those of the control group. Second, the school adjustability scores of the experimental group were statically more increased than those of the control group. Third, through the analyzing of the experiential reports, the contents of observation and the assessment list of the program, it was proved that the program revealed positive effects on enhancing the self-esteem and school adjustability of students in the deficient family.
On the basis of the results and the discussions, the following suggestions were offered. First, this study can be good educational materials to help the students of the deficient family to lead a happy school life to recover a low self-image and to cope with trouble situations positively. Second, the solution-focused group counseling program for the students of was composed with interesting activities so it's suitable to apply to the students. Third, a solution-focused group counseling can be used effectively for not only the students of the deficient family but also the students that make the various troubles in the school sites.
