The purpose of this study is to examine influence of music drama of Bible stories upon theological concept and self-concept of young children
For the purpose, the following questions were established.
1. What effects to biblical music drama have on theological concept and self-concept of young children?
How does biblical music drama have influence upon building theological concept and self-concept of young children?
2. Are there differences in the effects music drama of Bible stories have on theological concept and self concept of young children based on the sex of children?
As subjects of the study, thirty 4-year-old students at M kindergarten located in Dongjak-gu, Seoul and thirty 4-year-old students at S kindergarten located in Mapo-gu, Seoul were selected for a total of 60 students.
As the tool for the study, five popular stories in the Bible were selected through interviews and questionnaires with kindergarten teachers, and music drama were composed on the basis of the stories.
As methodology, in order to research on theological concept of young children, I used Goldman's assessment tools for religious thought and a questionnaire for theological concept that was developed by S-H Song (1986), and modified and supplemented by H-S Lee (1994), and S-W Kim (1999), then tested for its validity by 5 specialists. And, as an assessment of self-concept of young children, I used a self-concept picture assessment tool for children of Bently and Yeatts (1974) that was modified by S-H Kim (1999) and supplemented and verified for its feasibility by 5 specialists.
The data were statistically analyzed by using SPSS Win 12.0 Statistics Program, and in order to evaluate differences in theological concept and self-concept between two groups of young children, one group to which music drama of Bible stories were applied and the other group to which music drama of Bible stories were not applied, Paired-sample t-Test was used for analysis of data, and in order to observe differences between boys and girls, Two-way ANOVA was used.
The conclusions of this study are as follows:
Firstly, theological concept of young children who experienced biblical music drama was enhanced rather than young children who did not it. As subdomains, the former children group showed a higher average in the post study evaluation in the biblical concepts of Jesus, prayers, and the Bible than they did in the pre study evaluation, and also showed significant differences at p<0.05. However, although they showed higher average in God, church, and death, differences were not significant.
Secondly, self-concept of young children who experienced biblical music drama was enhanced rather than those who did not experience it. When observations were made by subdomains, all sub domains showed higher average scores in the post study evaluation compared to the pre study evaluation, and significant differences were shown especially in the sense of fulfillment with p<.05 and in peer relations with p<.01.
Thirdly, music drama of bible stories showed statistically significant differences in their effect on theological concept and self concept of young children based on sex of children but no major effects were displayed.
Through the above results, it was verified that music drama based on Bible stories have positive influence on building theological concept and self-concept of young children. That is to say, it is able to be concluded that, if music drama based on Bible stories are actively used in classroom of kindergarten, theological concept and self-concept of young children will improve more effectively. Therefore, kindergarten teachers have to present music drama based on Bible stories to young children, allow them to observe the progress of music drama by providing diverse environments to children, and by giving the children opportunities to plan, participate in, and evaluate their own plays, children should be encouraged to develop their theological concept and self concept of a higher level.
