Music is a kind of an art in which human thoughts and feelings are expressed by way of sound, and is a quite a creative product which is made into a specific form to the intention of a composer. It can be said that the objective of music education lie in that musical ability and creativeness in one can be developed by having him experience various pieces of music and activities.
Music appreciation, which is to be the basis of all musical activities, may include everything from the mere act of listening to the creative activities of making music actively again in oneself.
Presenting the theme of a music or any scene that comes to the mind after an appreciation in order to have more effective appreciation of the music enhances the interest in music appreciation and concentration ability. Besides, the act of visualizing physically after one remembers and understands music can be said to be the very musical activity and creative result.
On this, in this thesis, the meaning of music appreciation, musical benefit from physical expression and their relation with creativity are investigated, the contents of appreciation and physical expression presented in the curriculum are examined, and the studying model of music centered on physical expression has been conceived.
And to teach physical expression through appreciation of music, <William Tell Overture> by Rossini has been chosen as appreciation materials among many appreciation units for the 5th graders. <William Tell Overture> ded into 4 themes describing all the different moods and peculiar situations, each of the 4 themes has more peculiar character of a program music so that one may be easily reminded of the image of the music and can reach the physical expression readily.
This research has been done to examine the life and works of Rossini, to help them understand <William Tell Overture> perspective of the original opera <William Tell> and to analyze 4 themes, that is, '"Dawn", "Storm", "Serenity" and "The March of the Swiss Army' in detail. And the teaching-learning plan examples on this music and the ways of physical expression about the limited 2 themes, 'Dawn' and 'Storm', out of 4 themes, have been presented.
