Although dance education have had important role and significance in school education, it is in the difficult situation normally to manage the dance education due to the lack of teachers and students’ active participation, the lack of the number of lessons in the education curriculum, the lack of teachers’ specialization, and poor educational environment (the lack of facilities and materials), etc. therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to find out the problems by analyzing the general conditions of dance education which is managed in school education including the curriculum of dance education. Also this thesis was designed to offer the basic data for the normal and advanced dance education, examining the actual improvement of dance education in middle school on the basis of analyzing the problems.
In chapter 2 this thesis analyzed the contents of middle school dance education’ curriculum now in use and in chapter 3 to study the actual ways of improving middle school dance education, questionnaire research and interview research were performed with 24 physical educators and 732 students as subjects in national and public middle schools which are located in Osan and Hwaseong of Gyenggi-do.
Examining the actual conditions of middle school dance education, it shows that although most teachers and students feel the necessity of dance lesson, they think that dance lessons are not enough because the proportion of dance lessons in physical education is just 10%~15% and those small proportions of dance lessons don’t perform well. Also it is needed to offer concrete contents and obvious data as the way of improving the actual conditions of dance education.
Therefore, the improvements to solve those problems are as follows. :
First, the significance and necessity of dance education should be enhanced by performing the training program related to dance education for principals, vice-principals and teachers.
Second, the disposition of teachers who take dance lessons in each middle school is required. If it has any difficulties in the aspect of administration and finances, I think there is necessity to introduce the system which one teacher visit several schools and teach dance.
Third, dance education should be publicized with active support by such extracurricular activities as regular watching of the dance performances, enhancement of dance clubs, invitation dance performances, dancing contests, etc.
Fourth, it is very important to create the environment appropriate for dance education with equipments and facilities according to characteristics of dance education. Therefore, the existing facilities should be used to the utmost and also the necessary instruments of education should be completed and established.
Fifth, the contents in the small units of dance should be composed of more concrete and obvious data.
Sixth, it is required to compose the lesson contents by which students can have interests, motivation, and confidence of dance.
Seventh, dance lessons should offer students chances to experience various physical training events and program.
