The purpose of this study was to examine what encouraged elderly people to participate in physical leisure activities and how their participation in physical leisure activities was linked to their self-esteem.
The subjects in this study were 300 senior citizens in Western age who dwelled in Gyeonggi province as of 2007. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 291 respondents that seemed to be reliable were selected.
One instrument used in this study was questionnaires used by Kim In-gyeong(2005). The other was Gang Jong-su(1986)'s Korean version of Coopersmith(1967)'s Self-Esteem Scale. The instrument used by Lee Mi-gyeong(2002), Lee Gyeong-ae(1999), Park Seong-ho(2001) and Kim In-gyeong(2005) was modified to serve the purpose of the study. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program, and t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and multiple regression analysis were utilized.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the personal characteristics of the elderly people had a partial impact on their physical leisure activities. Second, their personal characteristics exerted an influence on self-esteem in part. Third, their participation in physical leisure activities had a partial impact on self- esteem.
