There is few systematic study about the effect on false memory. A few researches experience that negative emotion reduce the false memory and high arousal emotion increase the false memory. However, it is not clear whether valence or arousal has more influence on the false memory.
In this study, the dimension of emotion is divided to two such as valence and arousal and three experiments examined whether induced emotion would influence false memory effect in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. The emotion of subjects was induced by music and vignettes. After inducing emotion of subjects, 8 lists were presented in learning and the learning words were associated with critical lures. In recognition task, subjects decided whether recognition words corresponded with learning words. Experiment 1 managed delay-time from learning to recognition to find which dimension of emotion have more important effect on false memory. The results of this experiment present that false memory lasted regardless of delay time and induced negative or high arousal emotion produce more false memory that other induced emotion. Consequently, both of valence and arousal of emotion dimension have important influence on false memory. Experiment 2 complement a problem of manipulating emotion in experiment 1. The results of experiment 2 complement a problem of emotion of experiment 1 and confirm the results of the experiment. Experiment 3 managed fonts of leaning lists to find whether encoding in learning stage produce the effect of emotion on false memory. In condition of same fonts, all learning lists were presented general fonts and in condition of different fonts, 4 lists of learning lists were presented with particular fonts. As a result, more false memories were generated in same fonts than different fonts and when induced emotion is negative same fonts made more false memories. Therefore, the degree of relational encoding change according to external factors such as a font in negative emotion. These results are different with earlier researches a little and implications of these are discussed.
