The purpose of this research was to identify the effects of physical activity involvement on social development of sociability among middle school students with peer relationship.
To do this, students attending middle school located in Gyeonggi-do as of 2007 were selected as population, and 420 students from them were sampled and were asked to complete a survey, and the resulting data from 331 respondents were actually used in analysis.
The survey of social development was revised and formed according the purpose of this study by Jin Whan Suh (2004) based on the scale developed by Tae Ryong Han (1998), which was originally made by Bum Mo Jeong (1971). The reliability of the survey was Cronbach’s .841.
The survey of peer relationship was revised and based on the questions from Network of Relationships Inventory (NRI) by Furman (1985) and those from Eun Ji Kim (1996), which was revised by Chan Mo Koo (2000) and approved by Ji Eun Choi (2006).
The reliability of the survery was Cronbach’s .67.
Frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multi regression analysis were used to analyze the study. The conclusion of the study according to the analysis is the following:
First of all, there was a partial correlation between social population characteristics and social development among middle school students. In other words, their grade had a partial correlation with activity, safety, and independence. Also, their father’s education level and mother’s education level showed a partial correlation with activity as well.
Second of all, there was a correlation between social population characteristic and peer relationship. In other words, gender showed a correlation with competitiveness, and father’s education level was linked to leadership and confidence while mother’s education level showed correlation with leadership.
Third of all, there was a correlation between participation to sports and social development such as dominance and independance among middle school students.
Fourth of all, there was a correlation between participation to sports and peer relationship such as leadership, competitiveness, hostile, and confidence.
Last of all, leadership affects activeness of students and leadership, competitive ness affects activeness of students and leadership, hostile affects activeness of students, safety, leadership and social skills, and confidence affects activeness of students, leadership, and social skills.
