The problems of the elderly were cognized not to be private but to be social in accordance with more population of the elderly, so that better life quality of the elderly drew more attention. The purpose of the study was to examine empowerment as well as life satisfactions of the elderly at Cheongju and to investigate the relations positively and to give theoretical bases of the measures against welfare services for the elderly and to supply basic materials to elevate life quality.
The findings were:
Firstly, the average of empowerment was different depending upon demographic features of the elderly: The empowerment of the elderly had significant difference at age, educational background, spouse, number of children, living at same house, monthly living expenses, standard of living, health status, earning of living expenses and living problems, etc: The empowerment of self-image had significant difference at age, educational background, spouse, living at same house, monthly living expenses and standard of living, etc: The empowerment of actual power had significant difference at age, educational background, spouse, number of children, living at same house, monthly living expenses, standard of living, health status, earning of living expenses and living problems, etc: The empowerment of autonomy had significant difference at educational background, spouse, living at same house, monthly living expenses and standard of living, etc.
Secondly, life satisfactions had difference at demographic features: Life satisfactions had no significant difference at age and religions, but it had significant difference at age, educational background, spouse, number of children, living at same house, monthly living expenses, standard of living, health status, monthly pocket money, earning of living expenses and living problems, etc.
Thirdly, multi regression analysis was done to investigate that the empowerment of the elderly had influence upon life satisfactions even after controlling influence of demographic variables: Health status and standard of living had significant influence, and life satisfactions accounted for 51.9% at the multi regression analysis.
Therefore, the empowerment of the elderly had influence upon life satisfactions based on the findings: Health and wealth had influence upon life satisfactions of the elderly to require interest and efforts. The study suggested action programs of welfare services of the elderly to improve life satisfactions:
Firstly, short-term plans consisted of self-help group solving isolation, education in preparation for death, programs elevating self-esteem, construction of consulting services network, recreation activity programs for better social activities of the elderly, cultural spaces, development of volunteer programs being suitable to the elderly, supports of employment of the elderly to earn money, home life education to improve quality of relations between family members, and associated financial supports.
Secondly, long-term plans consisted of survey of basic desires of living life of the elderly, income support policy, construction of social infrastructure networks, elderly lecturer bank, and welfare cards for the elderly, etc to make political efforts.
Thirdly, teaching materials of elementary schools, middle schools and high schools should open a curriculum for understanding of the old age to produce social atmosphere that could integrate the society of the elderly and respect the elderly: And, colleges should also adopt cultural essential curriculum of old age subjects to establish interests on the elderly at nationwide level.
Lastly, an integrated service at psychological and environmental level should be supplied to help the elderly live healthy life and do economical self-support and to live satisfactory life by social integration. In particular, the elderly should find out new ways to contribute to community and to think of productive and valuable ones by themselves and to have new roles enough to exchange information with the outside world and to solve social isolation and to improve empowerment.
