This study is intended to relate the sub-chapters in the Korean language textbooks of middle school with the schema activated by the 'Before Reading', which is one of the textbook programs to stimulate learners to build some background knowledge before they study new chapters, and which was included for the fist time on the 7th Curriculum.
In this study, the background knowledge is categorized by how sub-chapters connected with 'Before Reading'. Also, the activities of thinking that is used to revitalize the schema is inquired.
A number of previous studies have shown that learners understand the text activating the schema during their reading as the comprehension of language and the activities of expression are considered as a kind of recognition.
On the basis of this theory, the reading process has begun to be emphasized in the education of reading, which is reflected as 'Before Reading' activities of Korean language textbooks.
Based on the activities, 'Before Reading' can be divided to the activation of the schema, the development of the schema, the establishment of the purpose and the motivation. Among them, this study is conducted on the first.
The patterns of activated schema can be categorized on the point of what connection the sub-chapters has with them as 'Before Reading' activates learners' schema to make understanding of sub-chapters.
The categorization follows these; the inclusion in which the schema activated by 'Before Reading' involves the contents; the premise in which precognition happens; the analogy which helps to understand the contents with having some common factors; the induction which shows concrete examples in 'Before Reading' activities.
The thinking processes of 'Before Reading' involve associating, reasoning, withdrawing, predicting, which are categorized in the same way as above.
The traits of 'Before Reading' can be found as below. First, the schema is activated by grade steps in the consideration of that types of analogy are found most frequently in the 7th grade and the premise 9th grade.
Second, withdrawing to recollect simply learner's experience is used most to activate the schema in 'Before Reading', with which the necessity of diffusive and creative thoughts is issued.
In addition, the weak points of 'Before Reading' also appeared when it fails to cover overall contents in the concept of higher levels only to interrupt the understanding of the contents.
The importance of this study is available because the purpose of the Korean language education is to guide the course for learners to find the meanings actively, which is reflected on the programs of 'Before Reading'.
The study on 'Before Reading' also can contribute to the way of activating learners' schema which can lead to improvement of their reading skills.
