This study aims at developing teaching, learning data that reorganized to be appropriate to the curricular operation selecting the contents of the mathematic history that may have learning effect. It is possible to be applied in learning guidance of ‘number and calculation area’ of Math 5-b of 5th grade in elementary school and proving the effect of goal achievement in the definitive area and perceptual area through comparison and review with ‘the other area’ that taught mainly of ‘number and calculation area’ which taught while applying this substantially and utilizing the results as the mathematical materials and stories.
We have set three study problem as follow to achieve the purpose of this study.
First, we develop mathematical materials and stories about number and calculation.
Second, we apply mathematical materials and stories to the math classes.
Third, we analyzed the contents while getting the opinion writings and analyze and compare the learning achievement and mathematical disposition about the area that we didn't input the mathematical materials and stories and the area we didn't input it.
To solve this study problem, we taught while utilizing the mathematical materials and stories for the ‘number and calculation area’ setting 1 class of 5th grade of G elementary school in Jeollanam-do Gwangyang city as the research class, and unfolded the class mainly of textbook for the ‘area besides it’ and we applied with pre-and post-test system in different areas design that is quasi-experimental design.
To prove that there is no significant difference between two areas, we used a pre-study achievement test as the test tool and to verify the effect of the mathematical materials and stories, we used a post-study achievement test, mathematical disposition test and opinion writings as the test tool.
The developing direction of the teaching and learning data developed in this study is as follows.
First, we let the students easily understand the contents such as life, anecdote and achievements of the mathematician that can give excitement to the students and understanding about math among the contents of mathematical history.
Second, we select the contents of mathematical story that fits to the contents of ‘number and calculation area’ of stage b of 5th grade in elementary school.
Third, we develop rearraged mathematic history for 5th grade elementary students which is suitable enough to reach the aim of the 7th elementary mathematics curriculum.
Fourth, we use the developed data while going side by side it with the textbook and make it utilized as the main teaching material while inputting it at the introduction part and development part of the lesson actively.
We developed 17 mathematical materials and stories in all according to ‘the number and calculation area’ of 5-b phase of elementary school keeping direction with this development, and ways to utilize these data effectively are as follows.
First, we utilize it as the data causing interest that enables the students to have interest in mathematics.
Second, we utilize it as the data for improvement of creative and mathematical thinking power.
Third, we utilize it as the main teaching material utilizing at the introduction and development of mathematical classes.
Fourth, we utilize it as the data that students can present and discuss.
The study results gained from this study are as follows.
As a result of the t-test, the average while practicing post-learning achievement test, it appeared that there was a significant difference statistically between ‘the number and calculation area’ and ‘the other areas’ under 5% of significant level. Also at the subgroup, it appeared that there was a significant difference statistically between two areas. In the mathematical disposition analysis, it appeared that at the classes which inputted mathematical materials and stories, there was the effect in all areas, curiosity, will, confidence, flexibility, value and reflection, and also in the analysis of opinion writings, there were responses such as, ‘It was interesting’, ‘It was fun’, ‘It was wonderful to know a new thing’, ‘It was of help in solving the problem for myself’, ‘I could find out various solutions’, ‘It grew me the power to study math’, ‘It was of help in developing creativity’, and ‘I want to study it even when I become a 6th grader’ for the classes that have inputted mathematical materials and stories.
The conclusions gained from this study are as follow.
First, the classes utilized the mathematical materials and stories gave them more help in improving the improvement in learning achievement than the classes by textbook.
Second, the classes utilized mathematical materials and stories were of help to the improvement of learning achievement as the group level got lower.
Third, the classes utilized mathematical materials and stories were of help in feeling interest, excitement and value toward mathematics.
Fourth, the classes utilizing mathematical materials and stories were of more help in mathematical disposition that is curiosity, will, confidence, flexibility, value and reflection than the classes mainly of lesson by textbooks.
