The purposes of this study were to reveal the effect size of the school organizational effectiveness and to show relationship of these variables to the school organizational effectiveness by using meta analysis.
The research questions of the study were as follows:
First, What was the effect size of the nine variables related to the school effectiveness?
Second, What was the difference in the effect sizes of the seven subordinate variables?
Third, What was the effect size of the variables related to the school organizational effectiveness on the school organizational effectiveness subordinate variables?
Fourth, What was the difference in the effect size of the school organizational effectiveness, according to the background variables - school establishment, gender, career, age, position, school district, school size, school grade?
Finally, What was the difference in the effect size of the school organizational effectiveness subordinate variables and related variables according to the dissertation publish year and dissertation sources?
In order to investigate into the research questions, doctoral and master's theses and journal paper on the school organizational effectiveness which were carried in Korea from 1980 to 2006 were searched in the National Assembly Library, National Library of Korea and Korea Education & Research Information Service by keyword "organizational effectiveness". Among the 239 doctoral and master's theses and 35 journal paper, 66 dissertations were excluded since it was impossible to apply the meta-analysis to them, for their not using the statistical method. Therefore, only 208 dissertations were chosen as the objects of analysis. Five researchers, including one meta-analysis statistical specialist, have classified the 208 dissertations, based on the coding sheet of <appendix 2>. The dissertations which couldn't reach the agreement were excluded after serious discussions.
The effect size of the 208 chosen dissertations was produced by using the Glass's ES, the effect size was calculated by using Excel Effect Size Computation Program developed by David Wilson of MicroSoft Corporation.
The results on this study could be summarized as follows:
First, the correlation coefficient of the variables related to the school organizational effectiveness turned out to be .397. In the nine related variables, decision-making(r=.545) was highest.
Second, the correlation coefficient of the school organizational subordinate variables turned out to be .141. In the seven subordinate variables, social psychology norm of school(r=.190) was highest.
Third, in the effect size of the school establishment, curriculum implementation(ES=.507) was relatively big. In the effect size of the teachers' gender, social psychology norm of school(ES=.183) was relatively big. In the effect size of the teachers' career and age, all variables were negative. In the effect size of the teachers' position, curriculum and organizational commitment(ES=.238) was relatively big. In the effect size of the school district, academic achievement evaluation(ES=.330) was relatively big. In the effect size of the school size, social psychology norm of school(ES=.242) was relatively big. In the effect size of the school grade, academic achievement evaluation(ES=.292) was relatively big.
Fourth, from the results on the analysis of the school organizational effectiveness subordinate and related variables according to the dissertation publish year, in the subordinate variables, job satisfaction(ES=.435) was the highest since 1990, organizational commitment was highest from 1991 to 2000, social psychology norm of school(ES=.473) was highest after 2001. In the related variables, personal characteristics(ES=2.144) was highest since 1990, organizational culture and climate(ES=1.241) was highest 1991-1995, school based management was highest after 1996.
Finally, from the results on the analysis of the school organizational effectiveness subordinate and related variables according to the dissertation sources, in the subordinate variables, effect size of journal paper was highest.
