Attachment is the special bond between an infant and a fosterer. From the early experiences with mother, an infant normally forms an expectation for the mother to take care of it, and help it, and for itself who is deserve to be taken care of. The types of attachments and the relationships with the parents in the early ages, which have formed this way, even last to their adulthood. These types of adult attachments can change according to the contents and the qualities of the relationships, and one person can have various types of attachments at the same time. Although the qualities of attachments can affect other people as well as themselves, but unfortunately not enough studies have been carried out so far.
The reason why the establishment of ego-identity is important in one's college days, is because the period is just before the adulthood. And also because one should make a decision about oneself in that period. If one's ego-identities is weak, one can no longer get interests in one's ways of life. And even if one make a decision with interests, the decision can be quite unreasonable.
Besides, once people become a university students, they should face lots of things which are contrary to their own values. And they naturally become more autonomously than before. People normally have lots of troubles dealing with these psychological problems. The adaptation to the campus lives are important because it can affect both their ways of lives and future lives.
Like this, the establishments of ego-identities and the adaptations to the campus lives are very important to the university students. This study tried to find out the effects of the types of adult attachment on these two important factors.
The subjects which this study is trying to examine are as follows.
1. Is there any differences among adult attachment, ego-identity and adaptation to the campus life according to the features of demography?
2. Do the types of attachment affect ego-identity?
3. Do the types of attachment affect the adaptation to the campus life?
There are three subordinate factors, dependence, intimacy and uneasiness in the measures of adult attachment. And there are 6 subordinate factors, independence, self-receptiveness, conviction for the future, object-directivity, subjectivity. intimacy in the measures of ego-identity. And the measures of the adaptation to the campus life consists of 6 subordinate factors, adaptation to class, adaptation to society, adaptation to individual emotion, and the environment of university. This study used 306 copies of questionnaire from three universities in Incheon and Chungnam.
To test the reliability, using the spss program, it drew the Cronbach α. To find out the sociodemographical backgrounds of the subject of the study, it drew the frequencies and percentages. And in order to find out the differences among the adult attachment, ego-identity, adaptation to the campus life which were organized according to emography, it carried out t-test, and ANOVA. It also carried out multiple regression analysis to find out the effects of adult attachment on ego-identity and adaptation to the campus life.
The summary and the discussions for the results of the study are as follows.
Firstly, as for the gender, uneasiness turned out to be the most meaningful factor among the measurements of adult attachment. Females turned out to be having higher level of it than males. Conviction for the future turned out to be the most meaningful factor among the measurements of ego-identity. And also, females are having higher level of it than males. As for the measurements of adaptation to the campus life, all the four subordinate factors, adaptation to class, adaptation to society, adaptation to individual emotion, and adaptation to environment of university turned out meaningful, and in all factors, males showed higher level than females. As for the grade in the school, adult attachment, ego-identity, and adaptation to the campus life turned out all meaningless, so the results showed that the grade are not affecting adult attachment, ego-identity, adaptation to the campus life.
Secondly, the higher the level of reliability and uneasiness become, independence, self-receptiveness, conviction for the future, object-directivity, subjectivity become lower. The higher the intimacy becomes, independence, self-receptiveness, conviction for the future, object-directivity, subjectivity, intimacy become higher. That is, it is safe to say that if one has high level of intimacy, one has high level of ego-identity. If one has high level of reliability and uneasiness, one has low level of ego-identity.
Thirdly. the higher the intimacy becomes, the adaptation to classes, the adaptation to society, and the adaptation to environment of university become higher. The higher the uneasiness becomes, the adaptation to individual emotion, and environment of university become lower. That is, if one's level intimacy is high, it means he's adapting to the campus life very well. But If one's reliability and uneasiness are high, it means he's not adapting to the campus life well.
The results of the study showed that gender factor was partly meaningful, but grade factor was not meaningful among the features of demography. The types of attachment are affecting the abilities to adapt to the campus life.
