Menstruation is a physiological phenomenon that happens 300 to 400 times to mature and healthy women during the lifetime. In the first half of menstrual cycle, the follicle in the ovary starts to grow and secretes estrogen. When the follicle becomes mature and ovulates, the corpus luteum which was transformed from the mature follicle secretes progesterone. According to the changes of hormones, the menstrual cycle repeats its four phases, i.e. menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulatory phase, and luteal phase. In each phase women also experience various physical changes in their bodies.
Before the experiment was started, 120 college women were surveyed asking about the degrees of menstrual pain they feel. 30 women were selected among those who fully understood the purpose of the research and agreed to participate in the experiment, and were divided into 2 groups to have 15 each. The cramps group is a group of women who answered the menstrual pain is level 6 or higher out of 10, and the control group answered level 5 or lower. In each menstrual phase the state changes of all the participants were carefully checked and recorded. The states include personal awareness of the changes of their skin conditions, the changes of moisture and sebum produced in the skin, and the concentration of hormones in blood. The results of the research obtained in the experiment will be offered to the industries as preliminary data to help them develop new cosmetics and skin care programs that are suitable for in each four different menstrual phases of women.
Questionnaire surveys were conducted to investigate the general features, personal skin care methods, and the individual skin conditions during the four phases of menstrual cycle of college women. To measure the contents of moisture and sebum in the skin that are changing according to the degrees of cramps, the levels of sebum in the forehead, eyes, cheek, and chin were measured once in each phase. The levels of moisture were measured three times in each phase and averaged. Serum tests were conducted for each person and analysed to measure the hormones during the follicular and luteal phases.
The data gathered in the experiment were statistically processed using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Frequency analysis for the general features and skin care behavior as well as t-test for the skin conditions that are based on self diagnosis, the contents of moisture and sebum in the skin, and the concentration of hormones in blood following the menstrual cycle were performed on cramps and control groups respectively.
The author obtained the following results from the experiment.
    1. The general features, skin care behavior, and skin conditions based on self diagnosis
Both cramps group and control group were in normal weight but were slightly thin. Their levels of satisfaction with skin were 4points and 4.46points out of 10 respectively. The survey result shows that the participants' skin care activities such as packing, scrubbing and massaging are taken when they feel like to do or the skin becomes rough. They use face lotions, skin lotions and sun blocks regularly but essence creams and eye creams irregularly. The skin conditions based on self diagnosis according to the changes of phase in the menstrual cycle were surveyed with the band score from 1 to 5. There were significant differences between two groups in answering that the skin becomes rough and itching in the follicular phase with p<0.05, pimples break out on the cheeks and sebum secretion is increasing in ovulatory phase with p<0.05, sebum secretion is increasing in luteal phase, and the pores becomes wider in menstrual phase with p<0.05.
    2. The changes of moisture and sebum in the skin following the menstrual cycle
In cramps group, there were significant differences in sebum of chin and moisture of forehead with p<0.05 following the menstrual cycle, where sebum measured in forehead and nose, and moisture in forehead, cheek and eyes show highest values in follicular phase.
In control group, there were significant differences in sebum of nose and moisture of forehead with p<0.05 following the menstrual cycle, where sebum measured in forehead, nose and chin, and moisture in forehead, cheek and eyes show highest values in follicular phase during the menstrual cycle.
    3. The changes of hormones following the menstrual cycle
The concentration changes of hormones, i.e, progesterone and aldosterone, show significant differences in both cramps(p<0.01, p<0.001) and control(p<0.05, p<0.01 ) groups.
