This study is about narrative structure and of film and TV series and their acceptance. A series is in general belongs to either one of two categories, depending on the means by which episodes are connected with the subsequent ones: a serial or a situation. However, in the course of time, mixed forms of both started to emerge as well. They can be named 'episodic serial series', which is subdivided into three ones by their characteristics. The characteristics of serial or situation decide the identity, so some series stand in between. Totally there are five forms in series: serial, episodic serial, serialized situation, situation looping, and featurings series.
In the episodic serial series, a sub-narrative which is spreaded on several episodes has become important. It is so-called 'mythology', which form an outline or a core mystery of the whole series altogether. Along with it came ‘stand-alone’ episodes, which are non-mythology episodes. They are also equally important to the series, since stand-alone episodes act as the controllers of mythology episodes. To combine with mythology and stand-alone episodes, a series needs two plans: macro(season-based) one and micro(week-based) one. As a result, mythology or recurring theme as sub-narrative develops gradually by season.
Film and TV shows shares similar natures since both use moving images, yet they have been treated as more different, in regard to the acceptance of audience. A change came in after the 1980s with the development of ‘cinematic’ TV shows, which have the styles as well as budgets equivalent to those of feature films and share cinematic audiences.
In this study, a concept called "sphere" is introduced. This sphere is weaved with several elements: makers(producers, actors, writers, etc) rules(genre, context, etc), and the audience. All elements are combined into a three-dimensional network model and they affect each other in the process. A sphere is born from makers and rules, and it is raised by audience. Then it dominates makers and rules, and it coexists with audience. Characters and setting forms a fictional world, and this world is under system of makers, and the system is combined with the audience into a sphere.
Audience is the active element in a sphere. In on-line network, audience is joined together to exchange their own information. They are organized into a collective brain. Their reviews and comments can define the identity of the series, even the show creators should take their opinions into account. Audience's collective brain can affect the series and concrete the sphere. A sphere can be grown up by fan, and also can be closed by fan.
There are several works by understanding of sphere. The crossovers and spin-offs are the ones made by the copyright holders. Especially spin-offs are worth a closer attention, because they expand a sphere in a way that fans of the originals prefer. The imitators which are made by the non-copyright holder, are worth as the indicator of popularity of the original work. And there are the fanfictions, which make a sphere more elaborated by the fan who wants to make a use of the sphere as he or she wishes to.
A series is an ongoing story. It is the sum of all the techniques to keep narrative unfinished - to make audience hang on to the next episode everytime. Beside, without reactions of the organized audience, a sphere cannot exit. Audience makes a series complete.
Keywords: fan fiction, mythology and recurring theme, stand-alone episode, series, serial, season, self organization, sphere, spin-offs
