The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between mother's child-rearing attitudes perceived by 1st and 2nd grade children and their school adjustment. The current study aims to recognize the importance of mother's child-rearing attitude and to help understanding of elementary school children's school adjustment.
The research problem were as follow;
First, is there any difference the mother's attitude according to background variables?
Second, is there any difference school-related adjustment according to background variables?
Third, what is the effect of school life to mother's child-rearing attitude?
The subjects of the study were 182 students in the 1st and 2nd grade from elementary schools in H elementary in the city of Ulsan.
The instruments used for this study are parents child-rearing attitude scale that Ann Jung-Man(2001), and school-related adjustment scale that Kim A-Young(2002).
As for statistics processing, the collected data was analyzed by means of SPSS Ver. 13.0 program, the frequency and percentage of children's general background were calculated, t-test was conducted in order to identify the difference of mother's rearing attitudes and adjustment to school life according to background variables, and Pearson's Correlation Analysis was calculated to identify the correlation between mother's rearing attitudes and children's adjustment to school life.
The conclusion on the study issues of this study based on the finding is as follows;
First, as to the relationship of mother's child-rearing attitude to elementary schooler school life adjustment, the students whose mother's child-rearing attitude is affectionate and autonomous show high ability in adjusting themselves to their school life.
Second, according to the study which is about the background variables(mother's age, mother's academic background, children gender) that influence mother's child-rearing attitudes, in children's gender distinction mother's child-rearing attitudes perceived by their children is more affectionate to girls and over forty years old mothers are more autonomous.
Third, in background variables(mother's age, mother's academic background, children gender) that influence children's school adjustment did not show any meaningful difference according to age of mothers and academic background of mothers and gender of child.
The finding of this study indicate that children's adjustment to school life is affected by mother's rearing attitude. Therefore, mother's desirable rearing attitudes are required in order for children's adjustment to school life and for desirable development of both an individual and society.
