The purpose of the study is the analyzing the relationship between parent's achievement pressure and children's goal orientation as well as the relations of goal orientation and features of characteristics as the part of the study, that Elliot and Church(1997) suggested, on the primary factor of goal orientation and the three types of learner's goal orientation such as mastery goal orientation, performance-approach goal orientation, and performance-avoidance goal orientation. We verify how the goal orientation would be shown differently according to learner's features of characteristics and analyze the differences between two groups of high and low achievement pressure of parent's.
The details of the study are as follows;
First, what is the relationship among mastery goal, performance-approach goal, performance-avoidance goal and 5 factors of features of characteristics?
Second, what are the differences between the two groups of high and low achievement pressure of parent's?
The target of the study was the total 231 boy and girl students of 6 classes in 3 middle schools in Daegu province and the total 177 surveys were used for the final analysis except
the 54 surveys which had the unfaithful and missing answers. The tests for the study were the test of the three constructions of goal orientation, the 5 factors of features of characteristics, and the parent's achievement pressure. We used the SPSS 12.0K for windows as the statistical program for the results.
We searched the Pearson's coefficient of the correlation between the types of goal orientations and 5 factors of features of characteristics and executed the t tests for the research of the differences of goal orientations between high and low achievement pressure of parent's.
The summary of the study is as follows;
First, as summarizing the coefficient of correlations between 5 factors of features of characteristics and the types of goal orientations such as mastery goal, performance-approach goal and performance-avoidance goal, the mastery goal is related to agreeableness, extroversions, openness and especially conscientiousness, on the other hands, is shown the opposite correlations with neuroticism. Performance-approach goal is related to extroversions, openness and conscientiousness. Performance-avoidance goal is passively related to neuroticism and oppositely related to extroversions.
Second, there are no differences of the types of goal orientations between high and low achievement pressure of parent's. According to the result of t test for the effect of parent's achievement pressure to children's goal orientations, there are no significant statistical differences.
It is important that the study has not been executed in domestic as well as we verified the differences of the types of goal orientation from parent's achievement pressure with the test of the relationship between three constructions of goal orientation and the 5 factors of features of characteristics. We found the relationship between goal orientation and features of characteristics from the study. In addition, we can find the significance of the study that we need to study the factors from families as the primary factors for goal orientations.
