The objective of the present study is to compare dancers’ wrong eating and weight control resulting from their negative perception of their body type and to examine the patterns of restrained eating and eating disorder according to dancers’ satisfaction with body type.
In order to identify the patterns of restrained eating and eating disorder according dancers’ perception of their body type, we surveyed 225 dancers in Seoul, Gangwon?do and Chungcheong?do on their satisfaction with body type, restrained eating and eating disorder, and drew conclusions as follows.
First, among the dancers’ general characteristics, weight and menarche had a significant effect on satisfaction with body type.
Second, menarche had an effect on restrained eating, and the effect was significant.
Third, among general characteristics, height, weight, water intake, irregular menstruation and skin trouble had a significant effect on eating disorder.
Fourth, a significant correlation was observed between satisfaction with body type and eating disorder and between restrained eating and eating disorder, and satisfaction with body type had a significant effect on restrained eating and eating disorder.
Dancing is an art expressing beauty using the body, and this study found that restrained eating resulting from dancers’ low satisfaction with body type had an effect on their eating disorder and consequently many problems were found in psychological and physical aspects in dancers who consumed a large amount of energy. Accordingly, we need to continue research for developing various programs that help dancers’ healthy weight control.
