The social issues raising from the old draw increasing attention in this modern society. Under this real and serious concern, this society is rocked by issues related to health, duty of support, finance and family without enough time to be fully prepared for the sudden social change. Unfortunately, however, we barely put off the superficial and transient problems, failing to come up with fundamental solutions. The most remarkable two pillars of the silver age plan were life-time job and duty of family supporting. However, life-time jobs vanished after the Asian Financial Crisis and the duty of family support was harder to be taken for granted due to the shift of social values. Those in their 40s or 50s will be the primary victims in 2020 when aging society arrives. They feel the feeble necessity of getting ready for the aging society, but somewhat tend to regard the aging society as a future event rather than the one that will haunt them in 15-16years. In addition, in a realistic reason, it is hard to take action actively for their silver days owing to the life patterns of the ordinary middle-aged Koreans. Korea is mired in unstable future. This country has the lowest social welfare budget level among the OECD members, and faces rapid aging society and prolonged low interest rate in the financial market. However, these issues are hard to be resolved in a short term since they are intermingled with the national economic growth and the developments in other social areas. Given this backdrop, the middle aged people need to have a look on their silver days; arm themselves with independence capability; and come up with self rescue measures. Stable and happy silver days are hard to earn without full readiness in the middle age. Therefore, this paper intends to find out about how the middle aged people, who will face the aging society, think of their gary days and ready for the days in middle and low income brackets. With that comparison, this paper also intends :to enlighten the public about the necessity to get ready for the silver days; and to extract the characteristics of the middle-aged people's readiness for the dusk of their life. This study conducted under the purpose above showed that those in their middle age have a strong will not to rely on their children in both groups. However, a high proportion of the subjects said that they have nothing to set aside because of tight financial condition despite their strong desire for independent and decent later years. In particular, the low income families found it more difficult for their given financial disruption. Most of the middle aged subjects longed for governmental and societal support such as improved quality of “age pension” and the expansion of its coverage. This result indicates that decent silver life cannot be guaranteed with the personal effort alone despite of the fact it is the most important factor. All the stake holders: individuals, families, government , and local communities should make a concerted effort to implement a substantial welfare policy for the social security net coming from the government and civil society for better later years. The range of efforts will present a better living standard, which will lead to an expectation for better later years, to the middle aged people amid their preparation for financially decent gray life. As a result, I am sure, they can enjoy productive and prosperous later days under healthier and more stable environment.
