The purpose of this study was to examine how drama play that used anti-bias fairy tales would affect young children's perspective-taking ability.
Research questions were posed as follows:
What is the influence of drama play by anti-bias fairy tales on the development of young children's perspective-taking ability?
1. What is the impact of drama play by anti-bias fairy tales on young children's cognitive perspective-taking ability?
1-1. What is the impact of drama play by anti-bias fairy tales on young children's others-intention perspective-taking ability?
1-2. What is the impact of drama play by anti-bias fairy tales on young children's others-thought perspective-taking ability?
2. What is the influence of drama play by anti-bias fairy tales on young children's affective perspective-taking ability?
To address the research questions, some efforts were made.
First of all, how fairy tales should be selected in consideration of young children's level and Korean circumstances was considered. And then several fairy tales were selected according to the data released by Kim Sei-ru(2006), Kim Eun-jeong(2000) and Jeong Myeong-hye(2006) and by having a discussion with a program council whose members were this researcher, two early childhood education professors and five or more early childhood educators with a master's degree and 10-year or longer career.
And five anti-bias areas that fitted in with Korean reality and could be dramatized were selected: culture, gender, physical appearance, disability and social stratum. Two fairy tales each were selected for the areas.
After those fairy tales were selected, a two-week-long program was conducted for each of the areas, and the drama-play activities were implemented from August through November.
The subjects in this study were 38 preschoolers at two different daycare centers in S district, Seoul. An experimental group and a control group were made up of 19 young children each. The instrument used to assess their social perspective-taking skills was Sin Hyeon-ok(1999)'s adapted version of Hudson, Forman and Brion(1982)'s Perspective- Taking Inventory for others' intention, thought and emotion. Before the drama-play program was implemented, it's confirmed that there was no gap between the collective averages of the two groups in perspective- taking skills.
The experiment was conducted 10 times by having the experimental group engaged in drama play by using the selected anti-bias fairy tales, and the control group just listened to the fairy tales and had a talk about them.
As a result, it's found that the drama play using the anti-bias fairy tales contributed to improving the young children's perspective-taking ability and affective perspective-taking ability.
The findings of the study were discussed in detail, and some suggestions were made about future research efforts.
