The purpose of this study is to examine and research on the types of the work-related stress that high school teachers feel in their work places and the methods to deal with the stress, and also to prevent or reduce the stress and encourage them to teach their students more efficiently. For this purpose, this writer suggested the following study hypotheses.
<hypothesis 1> The perception levels of the work-related stress that high school teachers feel differ greatly according to their background factors.
<hypothesis 2> The methods which high school teachers deal with work-related stress differ greatly according to their background factors.
<hypothesis 3> There will be a high correlation between the perception levels of the work-related stress that high school teachers feel and the types that teachers deal with the stress.
In order to examine these hypotheses, questionnaires were given to 450 teachers which work for high schools in Incheon. This writer used the questionnaire, "Lee Jae Cheol(2003)" after reorganizing it to find out high school teachers' work-related stress and "Kim Jung Hee, Lee Jang Ho(1987)" to survey the methods to deal with the stress.
The data collected from the questionnaires was analyzed, using the package program for statistics, Hangul SPSS 12.OK for windows.
'T-test' and 'F-test' were conducted to find out the difference between teachers' work-related stress, according to their background factors and the methods to deal with it. And also the correlation analysis were conducted to find out the relation between teachers' work-related stress and methods to deal with the stress.
The results of this study are as follows:
Firstly, according to the results on the perception levels of work-related stress that teachers feel,
1) The job stress factor which gives a potent influence on teachers is the factor caused by participations in school management.
2) Male teachers felt more work-related stress than female teachers.
3) Single teachers felt more work-related stress than married teachers.
4) Young teachers felt more work-related stress than elderly teachers.
5) Teachers with experience shorter than 9 years felt the most stress with respect to the participation in school management.
6) Teachers having charge of main school affairs felt more work-related stress than ordinary teachers.
7) Academic high school teachers felt more work-related stress than commercial high schools teachers.
8) Teachers working at large-scale schools(more than 40 classrooms) felt more work-related stress those working at small-scale schools.
Secondly, according to the results of the methods to deal with the stress,
1) Teachers prefer the methods focusing on the problem above all others.
2) Female teachers prefer the methods focusing on the problem and appealing to social supporters more than male teachers.
3) Single teachers prefer the methods focusing on the problem and appealing to social supporters more than married teachers.
4) Teachers in their 20s and 30s prefer the methods appealing to social supporters
5) Teachers with experience shorter than 9 years prefer the methods focusing on the problem and appealing to social supporters.
6) While ordinary teachers prefer the methods appealing to social supporters, teachers having charge of main school affairs do the ones focusing on the problem.
7) While academic high school teachers prefer the methods focusing on the problem and shifting their attention to other things, commercial high schools teachers prefer the methods focusing on the problem.
8) Teachers working at the school including 25~40 classrooms prefer the methods focusing on the problem and appealing to social supporters.
Lastly, work-related stress factors such as their teaching activities, guidances of pupils' school lives, training for teachers, conflicts with other teachers, classroom management, assigned works, teachers' personnel management, participants in classroom management, relations with parents or community, has a strong correlation with the method shifting their attention to other things, according to the relation between work-related stress and the methods to deal with it.
