The study shows that women's appearance-management behaviors are influenced by sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and objectified body consciousness, which have been proven to be the effective factors of the attachment to their appearance and the active appearance-management behaviors.
The purposes of this study were to verify that a causal relationship among all the factors was existing while being studied and the demographic trait influenced this relationship.
The subjects of this study were 900 women who have lived in Gwang-ju city and were the 20th to 60th. Data collection through the answered questionnaires was conducted during April 6~15, 2007. SPSS for windows 12.0 statistics Package was used for analysis of the data and also other tools were applied to account for the mentioned hypothesis, x2-test, two-way ANOVA, Duncan test, correlation, factor analysis, regression analysis, and Path analysis.
The results were as follows:
1. Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, which positively influenced appearance-management behaviors, were categorized into two factors, internalization and recognition. As studying each dimensional effect of sociocultural attitudes, it appeared that internalization influenced hair/skin management, make-up, weight management, and wear management, but recognition influenced make-up and weight management of the appearance-management behaviors. Additionally as analysing the effects, of sociocultural attitudes on undergoing a plastic surgery or consideration of it, it appeared that internalization made all the surgeries have the similar difference in the side of consideration, but only several surgeries have in the side of experience.
2. Objectified body consciousness was categorized into 3 factors, body shame, body surveillance, and beliefs about appearance control. It appeared that sociocultural attitudes positively influenced objectified body consciousness. As studying each dimensional effect of sociocultural attitudes, it appeared that internalization and recognition influenced body shame, body surveillance, and beliefs about appearance control.
3. Objectified body consciousness positively influenced appearance- management behaviors. As studying each dimensional effect of objectified body consciousness, it appeared that body shame, beliefs about appearance control influenced hair/skin management, make-up, and weight management but body surveillance influenced all the behaviors. Additionally as analysing the effects of objectified body consciousness on undergoing a plastic surgery or consideration of it, it appeared that body shame, body surveillance, beliefs about appearance control partly had the similar difference in both side of consideration and experience.
4. The direct effect of internalization of sociocultural attitudes on appearance-management behaviors was higher than the indirect effect of that of objectified body consciousness, but the indirect effect of recognition of objectified body consciousness was higher than the direct effect of that of sociocultural attitudes on appearance-management behaviors.
5. As verifying the effects of interaction between sociocultural attitudes and demographic variables on appearance-management behaviors, it appeared that the behaviors were not influenced by age, marriage status, occupation, education, income.
6. As verifying the effects of interaction between objectified body consciousness and demographic variables on appearance-management behaviors, it appeared that age, marriage status, and interaction with jobs influenced hair/skin management and make-up.
7. The cost of appearance-management statistically had the similar difference each factor which was age, marriage status, occupation, and income.
