The purpose of this study was to examine kindergarten teachers' recognition of the purpose of a free play time and their role performance during the class through questionnaires and interviews. In order to attain the goals of this paper, the following research questions were made: First, How do teachers recognize the purpose of a free play time in kindergartens? Second, How do teachers perform their roles during the free play time? For this study, 289 teachers working at private and public kindergartens located in Busan were requested to fill out the questionnaires and 6 teachers out of them were given an interview. For verification of the research questions, SPSS Windows 10.0 was used and the answers were processed in frequency and percentage. And the interview results were categorized. The research results were as follows: First, in relation to teachers' recognition of the purpose of the free play time, they thought the free play time most important, saying, "The free play time is very important because children can feel satisfaction and have a feeling of accomplishment by taking activities they want and choose." In relation to teachers' role performance in the free play time, most of the respondents replied that they praised kids' desirable behaviors. On the other hand, least of the respondents replied that they took a rest in a classroom (having snacks). In relation to the question about when they leave kids alone in a classroom, 57.4% of the respondents replied that they left kids alone when they had to copy, coat, or prepare materials for class. Some respondents replied that they left kids alone when they needed to go to a restroom or they had something to write down for parents. Second, in the interviews with the teachers, they talked about the free play time from the viewpoint of kids' integrated development and learning. All the teachers who were interviewed thought the purpose of the free play time positive. This paper also examined the cases the teachers perform their roles well or badly during the free play time. It was found that the teachers did a good job during the free play time in terms of interaction with kids, observations of them, supervision, evaluation, planning, and organizing. However, it was found that the teachers didn't do a good job when they were lack of teaching materials, when they had to prepare for another class, when they had other works to do, when they needed to use it for other purposes, and when the teachers were lack of experience or knowledge. As a solution to the case that the teachers can't play their roles, it was found that support with teaching materials/textbooks, protection of the free play time from events and other works, support with teaching staff, and teachers' attitudes would be good. This paper studied the important meaning of the free play time in kindergartens' curriculum, and tried to find out solutions to bad performance of the free play time. Through the research results, this paper made a conclusion that qualitative improvement of the free play time would be contributed to preschoolers' positive development.
