This study examined the relationship between children's self-esteem and mothers' reactions to children's negative emotion. The sample included 204 five-year-old children and 204 their mothers at day-care centers or kindergartens in Busan, Korea. Pictorial Scale Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children(Harter & Pike, 1984), and Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale(Eisenberg, Fabes, & Bernzweig, 1990) were used to assess children's self-esteem and maternal responses to children's negative emotions. To analyze data, Means, Standard Deviation, Range, %, Cronbach , t-test, Pearson's r, and multiple regression analysis were used through SPSSWIN 12.0 pc program. In testing all hypothesis, .05 was used. The main results are as follows: First, there were significantly positive differences between high mothers' supportive reactions and low ones in children's self-esteem. There were negative differences between high mothers' non-supportive reactions and low ones somewhat smaller in children's self-esteem. Second, mothers' supportive reactions were positively related to children's self-esteem, while mothers' non-supportive reactions were negatively related to it. Finally, mothers' emotion-focused, problem-focused and distress reaction variables were the significant predictors of the children's self-esteem. Especially, the mothers' emotion-focused reaction variable was the most influential predictor. This study was very important in the point of revealing causal relationship between children's self-esteem and mothers' reactions to children's negative emotion. These results will be useful of practical parenting and parent training programs.
