This study aims to investigate school effects on cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes of Korean 9th grade students. Traditional School Effects research has focused on cognitive outcomes to test whether school really can make a difference in student's cognitive achievement, and then to identify what characteristics of school is associated with it. The studies concerning about non-cognitive outcomes, however, are not enough to reveal the whole feature of school effect. The unbalance may cause to disregard a complexity of schooling that could make a conflict or an inconsistent result across outcomes. For comparative perspective, this study tries to estimate school effect in cognitive and non-cognitive outcome, and then to find out what school characteristic is effective respectively on various outcomes.
For this purpose, this study has three questions. One is about variability of student outcomes among schools: How much is between-school variance that can be explained by school variables? Is there any difference according to outcomes? The other is about an effective school: What school variables make a difference of schools in the cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes? Does effective school on cognitive outcome influence positively non-cognitive outcomes too? The third is about an interaction effect of schooling with student's background: Does school make an adjustment on influence of student background? Does school have common differential effects regardless of outcomes?
The data from "Analysis on the Level of School Education and Its Actual Status of Korean Schools: Middle-School" which was performed by Korean Educational Development Institute in 2004. The data was collected to target the population of 9th grade students in Korea, including the information of their parents, and teachers and principal of the students' enrolled schools. The final sample of this study is 9,122 students of 185 schools.
The two-level Hierarchical Linear Model(HLM) is applied in order to consider a multi-level feature of the educational data. And the HLM approach is thought to be appropriate to analyze interactive effect of student background and school, as well as main effect of school on student achievement.
Five dependent variables are selected to represent cognitive and non-cognitive outcome of student: mathematics achievement, collaborative learning attitude(CLA), care(CARE), cooperation and concession(CAC), and interest toward political and social issue(IPS). Mathematics achievement is a cognitive outcome, and the others are a non-cognitive.
The independent variables are used at both student and school level. Five student level independent variables are included in order to control student background characteristics : Gender, parents education(PEDU), general interaction of student and his/her parents(GI), school affairs specific interaction of student and his/her parents(SSI), and prior achievement level(PAL). For school level independent variables, there are four categories: student composition, structural characteristics, organizational characteristics, and school climate. The variables of student composition category are obtained by aggregation of student level variables. School mean of parents' education(MPEDU), school mean of general interaction of student and his/her parents(MGI), school mean of school affairs specific interaction of student and his/her parents(MSSI), and school average level of prior achievement (MPAL) are from the same variable of student level. The average level of social motivation of learning(MSML) is newly added. The structural characteristic category is compose of location, governance type(SECTOR), and gender type. The organizational category has five variables: Average educational career of teachers(CAREER), emphasis on student's personality development(PERSON), the degree of teacher's sharing curriculum related activity(SHARE), the degree of autonomy of teachers(AUTO), relationship between teacher and parents(REL_TP). Lastly, the category of school climate is including three variables: Student attitude taking mathematics class(ATT), relationship between students(REL_S), and the degree of students' academic related satisfaction(SAT).
The results are summarized as follows.
First, the size of between-school variance in cognitive outcome is larger than those of non-cognitive outcomes. The 8.88% of total variance of math achievement exists at the school level, but that of non-cognitive outcomes only ranges from 1.03% to 4.55% (1.03% in CLA; 1.50% in CARE; 1.17% in CAC; and 4.55% in IPS). Moreover, after controlling student background these between-school variance has decreased to 4.78% in math and 0.68% ~1.88% in non-cognitive outcomes (0.68% in CLA; 1.02% in CARE; 1.02% in CAC; and 1.88% in IPS).
Second, the educational outcomes are strongly associated with student background. The 47.9% of within-school variance of math score is tied up with student background variables. But, in non-cognitive outcomes, except IPS(18.8%) only 3.2% to 4.1% of within-school variance is explained by student background variables. It is also interesting that student background variables have explained the between-school variance by 42.2% in Math, 33.0% in CLA, and 58.6% in IPS. However, the explained variances are just 12.7% and 14.3% respectively in CLA and CARE. This implies that selection tendency caused by student background is likely to be more severe in cognitive than non-cognitive outcome.
Third, the school characteristics which is effective on student achievement are not consistent between cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes. Some variable are working to contrary directions according to outcomes. For example, CAREER takes a significant effect only on cognitive outcome, that is, math score. And SHARE is positively related with math score, but negatively with CARE. The school policy of emphasis on student personality development(PERSON) takes a negative effect on collaborative learning attitude(CLA), but positively on cooperation and concession(CAC) which imply civic consciousness and behaviour of social life. It is interesting that the average level of parents' education(MPEDU) is negatively related with the non-cognitive outcomes, while it has strongly positive effect on the cognitive outcome.
Fourth, the influence of some student backgrounds varies significantly among schools. In fact, student backgrounds are thought to be a crucial factor to determine a level of student's educational outcome. In the student level analysis of this study, all the student background variables turned out to be an important determinant of math achievement and other non-cognitive outcomes. However, the degree of its influence could be not identical among schools. Actually significant variability of the effect of prior achievement level(PRIOR) and general interaction pattern of student and his/her parents(GI) was detected.
And a few of school variables were certainly influential in making a differential effect of student background. The influence of prior achievement on math achievement turned to be weakened in a school where students are academically satisfied. And the effect of prior achievement on collaborative learning attitude(CLA) was reduced when a level of the students' taking math class attitude(ATT) was high, but magnified when the relation of school members ― teacher and parents is more harmonious. More experienced teachers in a school(CAREER) diminished the influence of general interaction pattern of student and parents(GI) on collaborative learning attitude(CLA) and cooperation and concession(CAC). The high level of SHARE actually increased the influence of general interaction pattern of student and parents(GI) on CARE, but a level of social motivation of learning(MSML) of students was negatively related even though it is not significant.
In short, the strongly positive relationship of prior achievement with math score was changed mainly by the student composition and climate variables, and the relationship with collaborative learning attitude(CLA) was changed by all the categories of school variable. Also, the influence of general interaction of student and parents(GI) was associated with school characteristic variables, which is mainly organizational variables in collaborative learning attitude(CLA), the variables of three categories except school climate in CARE, student composition and organizational variables in cooperation and concession(CAC), and structural variables in political and social interest(IPS). However, there is no common variable that is consistently effective on both cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes.
From these results, we have a few of conclusions and implications. First, school may make a significant difference in non-cognitive outcome as well as cognitive outcome. It is, however, smaller in non-cognitive outcomes such as collaborative learning attitude(CLA), CARE, and cooperation and concession(CAC). Therefore, we should pay attention to within-school differences in order to investigate school effect on non-cognitive outcome.
Second, school effectiveness has various dimensions. It is composed of cognitive and non-cognitive outcome which also has various type. Because of the multi-dimensional features, the consistent and effective school variables are hardly to be found. There was no common variable that may take an effect on both cognitive and non-cognitive outcome in this analysis. The effect of school climate variables is likely to be rather consistent across outcomes. Therefore, it suggests that we should explore what characteristics of school is effective respectively on various educational outcomes. Specific speaking, the academic climate of school is one of the most important factor to improve student achievement in cognitive outcome, and at the same time, the socially positive climate of school should be formed in order to improve non-cognitive outcomes such as civic consciousness and behaviors.
Third, the effect of student backgrounds is less determinant than expected. It varies according to educational outcomes, and could be strengthened or weakened by school characteristics. This results implies that educational gap caused by student backgrounds could be close through school effectiveness and improving in terms of cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes.
