Thanks to 'Korean Wave' since the 21^(st), Korea film industry has been very successful, however, the portion of SF movie is relatively weak.
But the good news is that Korea has put its name on the list of 'technology leading countries' and the world started to look at Korea for its state-of-the art technology such as computer graphic, which is a potential sign for Korean film industry.
The state-of-the art computer technology is one of the most important factors to complete a SF movie as it highly impacts on 'special effects" and 'special make-up", which can invite more and more movie investors for future screen industry.
Considering the facts, the importance of the 'special make-up' is ever higher than ever. In other words, filmmakers are struggling into entertaining audiencevisually by very specific works of special make-up.
Special make-up is a creative process that is needed to make a good movie and a process that can be done by analyzing characters and meeting audience's longings.
Also, this process can be classified into sections. 1. Information of state-of-the art materials and technology. 2. Involvement of all the decision making process.
Regardless of all the described importance of special make-up above, it has been considered to be some kind of make-up artists that just offer technique. But now, 'special make-up' contributes to SF movie industry in a creative way.
Therefore this study aims at discuss a general concept of special make-up & build make-up process as a systematic design process. As an example of 'converting special make-up process to a design process', an outstanding SF movie in Korea, 'Natural City' was selected as a model,
Especially the make-up design in the movie had high reputation for representing characteristics& creating our heartstrings in our way, other than going after Hollywood's.
Followings are the summary of 'Special make-up design process'.
First, Special make-up design plays a creative role by creating characters visually, which is based on very specific analysis and close communication between movie directors and actors.
Second, relationship is extremely important for 'Special make-up design process'. Firstly, character of actor should be managed by movie director & production design.
Also discussion & process of special make-up design should be made at the stage of pre-production.
Secondly, after analyzing characteristics, ways to broaden imagination shall be planned. To accomplish that, materials for special make-up and technology shall be analyzed, at the same time, it should go along with production expenses & ways to meet reasonable techniques.
Third, by applying 'special make-up design process' with the movie 'Natural City', identify issues that blocks Korea make-up design development. The followings were identified as issues as special make-up process in 'Natural City'. First, it was hard to find connections between actors' feeling or emotions. Second, 'special make-up design'had to be given up due to production expense.
In sum, there was found the lack of specialists that can control huge SF movies in Korea's movie industry. Therefore, it is expected that this study can be a mild stone for systematiceducation in the future and gives pride to the special make-up designers. It will eventually provide confidence to designers & satisfactory to actors, directors as well as audiences.

21세기 이후 한류의 영향으로 우리나라 영화산업은 비약적 발전을 이루고 있지만 우리나라 영화 산업계에서 SF영화가 차지하고 있는 비율은 매우 미약한 실정이다. 하지만 최근 우리나라는 세계적으로 IT산업을 리드하는 반열에 동참하게 되는 등 컴퓨터 그래픽과 같은 첨단 테크놀로지를 리드하는 국가로서 위상이 높아지고 있어 우리나라의 SF영화산업의 미래를 밝게 해주고 있다. 첨단 컴퓨터 테크놀로지는 SF영화를 완성시키기 위한 중요한 요소로서 ‘특수효과’는 물론 ‘특수분장’에 지대한 영향을 미치므로 미래영상산업에 막대한 자본을 끌어 들일 수 있는 요인이 된다 하겠다.
이러한 점에서 SF영화의 가치를 올리기 위해 특수분장의 중요성은 그 어느 때보다 높아지고 있다. 다시 말하면 영화제작에서 정교한 실사작업을 통해 관객의 열망을 시각적으로 충족시킬 수 있는 특수분장의 임무가 더욱 커지고 있는 것이다.
특수분장은 영화의 감성적, 표현적 완성도를 높이기 위한 창조적 과정으로서 시나리오에 나타난 캐릭터를 정확히 분석한 후 시각적 상상력을 창출함으로써 관객의 열망을 충족시키는 창의적 디자인 프로세스가 요구되는 분야이다. 또한 특수분장을 완성시키기 위한 구현과정은 영화감독은 물론 프로덕션 디자인분야와 창의적 의사결정 과정에 동참하며 아울러 창의적 상상력을 제고시킬 수 있는 첨단 재료과학 정보, 테크놀로지 등 다양한 분야 등과 콜래버레이션(collaboration)을 통해 진행하는 매우 복합적인 과정이 수반된다.
그러나 그동안 우리나라 특수분장 분야는 영화제작 과정에서 단지 주변의 요소로 취급되어 단지 기술을 제공하는 ‘분장사’로 폄하되어온 것이 사실이다. 더구나 우리 영화 산업계에서는 아직 거대한 SF영화를 컨트롤 할 수 있을 만한 특수분장 관련 전문인력이 부족한 실정이다, 이에 아직도 우리나라에서는 특수분장에 대한 교육 및 이론적 논문이 활발히 진행되지 못하여 선행연구 자료도 미흡하다. 이러한 점에서 특수분장이라는 장르는 우리나라의 SF영화 산업의 발전에 적극적으로 공헌할 수 있는 창조적 디자인 분야로서 그 위상을 높여야할 시점인 것 같다.
따라서 본 논문은 관객에게 상상적 창의성으로 흥미를 높여줄 수 있는 SF영화를 창출시키기 위해 특수분장 과정을 단지 기술적 측면만이 아닌 창의적 발상으로부터 출발하는 ’디자인 프로세스 체계’로 개발, 구축하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 본 ‘특수분장 디자인 프로세스 체계’를 적용시키는 사례로 우리나라에서 특수효과와 함께 특수분장의 영역을 넓힌 대표적 SF영화로 평가받고 있는 ‘내츄럴시티(Natural City)’를 도입하여 고찰하였다. ‘내츄럴시티’에서 분장디자인은 캐릭터디자인 측면에서 단순한 헐리웃의 모방이 아닌 상상 속에 있는 우리정서를 창출하고 그 캐릭터 특성을 발굴하는 독창성으로 인정받은 바 있다. 또한 영화 ‘내츄럴시티’의 사례연구를 통해 특수분장 디자인 프로세스를 적용하는 과정에 서 우리나라 특수분장 분야의 문제점과 한계점을 분석하여 앞으로 우리나라 특수분장 분야의 발전가능성에 대해 논의하였다.
본 논문의 주제인 ‘특수분장 디자인 프로세스’는 영화제작과정에서 특수분장을 진행시키기 위해 필수적으로 요구되는 다각적인 프로세스를 바탕으로 구축되었으며 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같이 요약될 수 있다.
첫째, 특수분장 디자인은 영화의 감성적, 표현적 완성도를 높이기 위한 창조적 과정으로서 영화속의 캐릭터를 정확히 분석한 후 당 시대의 관객이 요구하는 열망을 충족시킬 수 있도록 공상적 상상력이 내재된 캐릭터를 시각적으로 표출하는 모든 과정을 의미한다.
둘째, 특수분장 디자이너는 캐릭터에 창조적 상상력을 부여하기위해 인체해부학적인 기초지식이나 국내외 첨단 재료과학에 대한 전문적 지식을 습득할 뿐 아니라 이러한 정보를 바탕으로 입체적으로 다양하게 표현할 수 있는 기법을 분석, 고찰한다. 특히 포스트 프로덕션(Post Production) 단계에서 컴퓨터 그래픽(CG: Computer Graphic)과 같은 첨단 컴퓨터 테크놀로지는 특수분장의 표현성을 극대화시킬 수 있는 중요한 과정이다.
셋째, 영화제작 과정에서 특수분장 디자인 프로세스에서 중요한 것은 실력있는 팀을 구축하는 것이다. 특히 특수분장팀장은 영화제작 과정단계인 프리프로덕션(Pre Production), 프로덕션(Production) 단계에서 영화감독을 중심으로 프로덕션 디자인 팀과의 밀도있는 의견교환과 합의를 통해 제작과정의 순간순간마다 명확한 결정을 내려야할 책임을 지닌다. 팀과 시나리오를 분석하며, 감독과의 의견교환을 통해 상상력을 동원하여 영화에서 표현하고자 하는 캐릭터를 명확히 추출, 표현한다.
넷째, 특수분장 디자인 프로세스에서 ‘관계성(relationship)’은 창의적 발상 및 구현을 위해 매우 중요하며 독창적 프로세스를 거친다. 다시 말하면 영화감독 및 프로덕션 디자인, 배우는 물론 국내외 첨단 재료과학 정보, 첨단 테크놀로지 분야 등 다양한 분야와의 콜래버레이션(collaboration) 매니지먼트를 통해 이루어지진다. 특히 특수분장팀은 영화제작 진행과정에서 불시에 발생되는 다양한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 다양한 분야와 면밀하고 유기적인 관계를 통해 판단해야 하며 유연한 즉흥적 판단력이 요구된다.
이러한 요소를 바탕으로 구축된 ‘분장디자인 프로세스 체계’를 적용시키기 위헤 영화 ‘내츄럴시티’를 사례로 도입하였는데 우리나라의 영화산업의 실정에서는 기획했던 디자인 체계를 모두 적용하기 어렵다. 내츄럴 시티의 영화사례를 통해 나타났던 문제점을 요약해 보면 첫째, SF영화 제작의 노하우와 인식부족과 2년이상 소요되었던 제작기간 때문에 발생된 인물들의 분장 연결과 감정연결의 어려움 둘째, SF영화에 대한 인식부족으로 시간이 갈수록 제작비의 삭감으로 인해 초기에 기획된 특수분장의 포기 등으로 요약될 수 있다.
따라서 ‘특수분장 디자인 프로세스 체계’의 구축을 주제로 한 본 연구가 특수분장 분야의 창의적 교육 체계를 정립시키는 학문적 자료뿐 아니라 실제 영화제작에서 실제 적용될 수 있는 실천적 자료로 활용되어 우리나라의 영화산업에 도움이 되기를 바란다. 본 논문을 바탕으로 체계적인 디자인 교육을 받은 특수분장 전문가들이 디자이너로서의 자긍심과 함께 배우와 감독, 그리고 관객까지도 만족도를 높이게 됨으로써 창조산업에 기여하는 디자인 리더십이 확립되기를 기대한다.
