This thesis was to study the process of psychological changes of six middle-aged men practicing in dance sports, by using a grounded theory approach, and to develop the substantive theory on the process.To apply a grounded theory approach in this study, data were gathered through the participant observation and the structured interview, and these data were analyzed and integrated by the open coding, the axial coding and the selective coding to find out the process of promoting the psychological well-being and its factors and types.According to the coding analysis in this study, 149 concepts were found in the formation of psychological well-being and these concepts were classified into 18 upper categories and 43 lower categories. The formation of psychological well-being as time lapse is demonstrated as five steps; a challenge toward the dance sports, changes in attitude and emotion while participating in dancing, resolution of conflict obtained through the proactive participation, changes and strengthening internally and externally. Further, it is acknowledged that this formation proceeds with combining the contextual and the mediating factors along with the factors constituting the psychological well-being. The people attaining psychological well-being through the internal and the external changes consist of four types; the self-directed, the accepting, the staying in current status and the ones growing with communication effort.Through the phase analysis, major factors working characteristically as per step were analyzed, and their strength and weakness were compared as well. In addition, theoretical foundation is prepared to understand the participation steps of the middle-aged man in dance sports and to provide psychological well-being as a consequence.In this study, it is concluded that the middle-aged men attain psychological well-being by the internal and the external changes through dance sports.Finally, this study helps understand comprehensively the middle-aged men’s participation procedure in dance sports and provides in-depth understanding of their experience and attitude in leisure time as well as insights into their participation in dance sports.
