The objective of this study was to see the effects of role play program on the self-expression of elementary school students. For this, following hypothesises were made:
Frist, does role play program have effects on the self-expression of elementary school students?
Second, does role play program have effects on sub-areas to self-expression such as behavioral, perceptional, and emotional self-expressions?
For this purpose, after explaining role play program to the students who attended two classes in the 4th grade of D elementary school located in Kimhae city, the study classified 60 students who wanted to participate in the program into two groups, respectively called test group and controlled group, each containing 30 students,
The treatment for test group involved the use of the program consistent with the professionals recommendations that it would help students express themselves. The role play program was conducted 2 times a week, a total of 10 sessions, and the duration for each session was from 40 to 50 minutes, while the treatment for controlled group involved nothing except for regular classes.
Each student was given a test sheet after the treatment was given, to test the reliability, which was originally made by Kim Sheong-hee (1991) and adapted by Son Min-jeong (2007).
The verification of the hypothesises in the study involved the use of SPSSWIN10.0 program and statistical analysis to produce average and standard difference between pre-and post inspections.
The findings in the study suggested that:
First, the students who participated in role play program showed a significant difference in the ability to express themselves than the student who did not.
Second, compared with controlled group who did not participate in the program, test group who did participate it showed a significant difference in behavioral ability which was a sub-area to the self-expression but not showed any statistically significant difference in perceptional, emotional, and general self-expression abilities, suggesting that role play program generally had effects on enhancing the ability of self-expression; but in the sub-areas, the behavioral ability was enhanced, but there were no change in the abilities such as perceptional, emotional, and general expression abilities.
Finally, based on the findings shown above, the study concluded that role play program had effects on the elementary school students' self-expression ability.
On the other hand, it is valuable to note that there were difficulties in securing the tools for the measurement of self-expression, the timing and place to conduct the test, the organization of the program, and making students understand the contents. Therefore, future studies could be recommended that they have safe places and sufficient duration of time as much as possible.
