The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ayurvedic yoga program on the obesity and self-esteem of elementary school obese children. 4 of obese children, who were beyond the middle level of obesity and attended to N elementary school located in C city, Gyeongnam Province, was given the identification of their constitutions which were classified into vata, pitta, and kapha as tridosha in the ayurveda. They were also given a program, ayurveda therapy which included respiration, meditation, and yoga.
The findings were as follows:
First, collectively, 49.68% of obesity before the program didn't take place was lowered to 43.40% after it took place, and individually, the lowered change in obesity ranged from 10-14%, suggesting that even though there were differences in the change according to the constitutions, the program had an effect on lowering the whole participated children's obesity.
Second, in case of self-esteem, the change in obesity of 3 of 4 participated children was significant, while the remaining child didn't show any change. The child had the highest weight among the children.
Third, given the findings, the ayurvea therapy of respiration, meditation, and asana could have effect on not only the change in obesity and self-esteem but also contributing to helping people change their thought, who thought of only rope-jumping, diet, and exercise as the proper methods of controlling obesity.
Finally, this study supported the idea that ayurvedic yoga program had effect on the obese children's positive obesity control and self-esteem.
