The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of display rule according to young children's age and sex and to investigate the effect of theory of mind and affective perspective taking on display rule.
The subjects were 31 four-year-olds and 33 five-year-olds children in Daegu. Children's display rule(behavior, understanding, motive), theory of mind and affective perspective taking were measured with tasks based on several studies.
The major finding of inquiry on the difference of display rule according to young children's age and sex were as follows:
First, there were not significant differences in display rule behavior according to age.
Second, there were significant differences in display rule understanding according to age. There were also significant differences in display rule motive according to age.
Third, there were not significant differences in display rule according to sex.
Next, the major finding of inquiry on the effect of theory of mind and affective perspective taking on display rule were as follows:
First, positive display rule behavior was affected by theory of mind. But the effect of theory of mind and affective perspective taking on negative display rule behavior was not significant.
Second, display rule understanding was affected by theory of mind and affective perspective taking.
Third, theory of mind and affective perspective taking accounted for prosocial display rule and self protective display rule significantly. Especially self protective display rule was affected by affective perspective taking.
