The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Hannah Arendt's conception of freedom can be a resource for women‘s politics.Hannah Arendt's freedom means acting with peers in the public sphere. In Arendt's view, freedom is closely related with speech-action and politics. Arendt's conception of public freedom is premised on the distinction between the public and private spheres and on the political subject as citizen. These characteristics of her conception of freedom provide resources to settle predicaments in women's politics. While Arendt's conception of subject can be the alternative that settles predicaments in feminism, the way Arendt divides the public and private spheres simultaneously causes difficulties and provides resources for women's politics. Therefore Arendtian distinction between the public and private spheres should be dismantled and reconstructed. To recognize the problems and alternatives that Arendtian distinction of public/private spheres poses, it's important to consider the problems that the dichotomy of the private and public spheres has posed. The dichotomy of the public and private spheres has been criticized by feminists for a long time in that the distinction devalues the activities associated with women in private sphere. The distinction also makes it difficult to see that women's activities and responsibilities in private sphere affect their ability to compete with men in the public sphere. And the dichotomy of public/private spheres has been constructed in a gendered way and makes it difficult to politicize the problems which are associated with women and which arise in the private sphere. Feminists have argued that the distinction is itself a patriarchal device. To resolve these problems, many efforts have been made to liberate women from oppression in the private sphere and to politicize matters in this sphere. Those efforts have made great advances. But they caused problems as they limited the women's politics to the private sphere and liberation. Public freedom and public sphere have existential importance for human beings. Therefore public freedom and the public sphere should also be dealt with in women's politics. Women need to freely take an active part in the public and private spheres just as men do. Both liberation in the private sphere and freedom in the public sphere are important for women's politics. In Arendt's view, the spheres of household and economy are classified as private spheres. Her rigid distinction of the public/private spheres is an obstacle to theorize political freedom in a feminist way. To Arendt's way of thinking, property means a shelter and the domain of privacy. The public sphere is created when people appear and act in a co-ordinated way in the condition of plurality. Therefore freedom can be exercised in the private sphere. Everywhere people can appear and act freely and create the public sphere. Her distinction is redesignated: the property as the private sphere and the rest of other spheres as the public sphere. As for the political subject as citizen, it has a predicament in women's politics because the woman subject is linked to the identity of the female as a woman and as a group. Accordingly, as many differences like race, class, ethnicity, culture have emerged within feminist movements, the women subject is dismantled and has become a hybridized and complicated subject. But differences and conflicts within Feminist movements pose solidarity as the important and major task, since differences and conflicts make it difficult to solidarize women. Arendt's conception of the self provides a resourse in this matter. She did not take an a priori self or an organic self as the foundation. In her thought, the subject consists of multiple selves. By arguing for multiple selves, Arendt criticized the monism that Western philosophers had long insisted on. Multiple selves means that there is no identity behind or before the doing. So doing and doer are the same. The identity of the doer consists of doing, which is acton. On Arendt's account, to act freely in the public sphere is to reveal who one is, through innovative speech and action, and to act in a co-ordinated way. In these regards, Arendt's action can provide the basis for the co-existing of the individual with associations. In general, Arendt's political action is interpreted as deliberation, debate, or co-ordinated action, but it can be interpreted as to resist any forces which intend to domesticate the subject with standards, or norms. On Arendt's account, by imposing innumerable and various rules, the social tends to normalize people, to make them behave, to exclude spontaneous action or outstanding achievement. As contrasted with the social and with the behavior, political action begins something new and performs and achieves something excellent. Theses characteristics of political action make it possible to interpret action as resistance. By interpreting action as resistance, political action has enlarged. By theorizing an action in concert that is riven by differences, the concerted action can be thought of as a practice in vision of not only 'with' but also always simultaneously 'against' others. With a resignified public sphere, Arendt's freedom plays an important part in women politics.
